Confirmed — and the year science caught up

Statements in the Qur'an whose descriptive content matches established science, with the year science established it

The rule, and why the weak entries are here on purpose

An entry qualifies only if the science is SETTLED - not promising, not emerging, settled - and a date and discoverer can be named. Every entry also declares whether the fact was observable to a 7th-century observer. That declaration is what makes this a scholarly list rather than a promotional one: an accurate description of something anyone could see is not the same as a statement that could not have been checked at the time, and conflating the two destroys the credibility of both.

How strong is each correspondence?

Strong
18
Not observable in the 7th century; the correspondence is specific.
Moderate
31
Real correspondence, but partly inferable or the language admits other readings.
Weak
29
Accurate, but the phenomenon was plainly observable. Listed honestly.

Could a 7th-century observer have known it?

Not observable in the 7th century
34
Partly observable
25
Plainly observable then

Antiquity to 1500

9 confirmed

Facts already known to the ancient world. These confirm descriptive accuracy, not concealed knowledge - and saying so is what makes the rest of this list credible.

HilaliHe sends down water (rain) from the sky, and the valleys flow according to their measure, but the flood bears away the foam that mounts up to the surface, and (also) from that (ore) which they heat in the fire in order to make ornaments or utensils, rises a foam like unto it, thus does Allah (by parables) show forth truth and falsehood. Then, as for the foam it passes away as scum upon the banks, while that which is for the good of mankind remains in the earth. Thus Allah sets forth parables (for the truth and falsehood, i.e. Belief and disbelief).
SahihHe sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus Allah presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus does Allah present examples.
PickthallHe sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam - from that which they smelt in the fire in order to make ornaments and tools riseth a foam like unto it - thus Allah coineth (the similitude of) the true and the false. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. Thus Allah coineth the similitudes.
YusufaliHe sends down water from the skies, and the channels flow, each according to its measure: But the torrent bears away to foam that mounts up to the surface. Even so, from that (ore) which they heat in the fire, to make ornaments or utensils therewith, there is a scum likewise. Thus doth Allah (by parables) show forth Truth and Vanity. For the scum disappears like forth cast out; while that which is for the good of mankind remains on the earth. Thus doth Allah set forth parables.
ArberryHe sends down out of heaven water, and the wadis flow each in its measure, and the torrent carries a swelling scum; and out of that over which they kindle fire, being desirous of ornament or ware, out of that rises a scum the like of it. So God strikes both the true and the false. As for the scum, it vanishes as jetsam, and what profits men abides in the earth. Even so God strikes His similitudes.
The established science

Smelting produces slag - a lighter waste layer that rises above the molten metal and is skimmed off. The ayah draws an exact parallel between flood foam and metallurgical dross, both being the worthless portion that rises and is discarded.

When it was established

antiquity / 1800s — Smelting practised since antiquity; slag chemistry formalised in 19th-century metallurgy

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Both phenomena were familiar - flash floods in wadis and metal working were part of ordinary experience.

Caution — read before citing

A precise and vivid analogy drawn from two observable processes. Its interest is rhetorical craft, not concealed knowledge.

HilaliAnd He it is Who has subjected the sea (to you), that you eat thereof fresh tender meat (i.e. fish), and that you bring forth out of it ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing through it, that you may seek (thus) of His Bounty (by transporting the goods from place to place) and that you may be grateful.
SahihAnd it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.
PickthallAnd He it is Who hath constrained the sea to be of service that ye eat fresh meat from thence, and bring forth from thence ornaments which ye wear. And thou seest the ships ploughing it that ye (mankind) may seek of His bounty and that haply ye may give thanks.
YusufaliIt is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful.
ArberryIt is He who subjected to you the sea, that you may eat of it fresh flesh, and bring forth out of it ornaments for you to wear; and thou mayest see the ships cleaving through it; and that you may seek of His bounty, and so haply you will be thankful.
The established science

The sea provides protein, and marine organisms produce nacre and pearls used ornamentally. Coral and shell were worked as ornament across the ancient world.

When it was established

antiquity — Known and practised since antiquity; pearl fishing was a major Gulf industry long before the revelation

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Pearl diving was one of the principal industries of the Arabian Gulf.

Hilali"Give me pieces (blocks) of iron," then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said: "Blow," till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper to pour over it."
SahihBring me sheets of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."
PickthallGive me pieces of iron - till, when he had levelled up (the gap) between the cliffs, he said: Blow! - till, when he had made it a fire, he said: Bring me molten copper to pour thereon.
Yusufali"Bring me blocks of iron." At length, when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountain-sides, He said, "Blow (with your bellows)" Then, when he had made it (red) as fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour over it, molten lead."
ArberryBring me ingots of iron!' Until, when he had made all level between the two cliffs, he said, 'Blow!' Until, when he had made it a fire, he said, 'Bring me, that I may pour molten brass on it.'
The established science

Pouring molten copper over heated iron produces a bonded composite structure and a corrosion-resistant surface. The described sequence - assemble iron, force air to raise temperature, pour molten metal over - is a coherent metallurgical procedure.

When it was established

antiquity / modern metallurgy — Bellows-forced furnaces and copper casting both established in antiquity; the metallurgy of iron-copper bonding formalised in the modern era

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Both metals and both techniques were known.

Caution — read before citing

The procedure is coherent, which is worth noting for narrative plausibility. It is not concealed knowledge. Its real interest is Category 4 - that no excavated structure matches this construction.

HilaliAnd We taught him the making of metal coats of mail (for battles), to protect you in your fighting. Are you then grateful?
SahihAnd We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?
PickthallAnd We taught him the art of making garments (of mail) to protect you in your daring. Are ye then thankful?
YusufaliIt was We Who taught him the making of coats of mail for your benefit, to guard you from each other's violence: will ye then be grateful?
ArberryAnd We taught him the fashioning of garments for you, to fortify you against your violence; then are you thankful?
The established science

Mail armour distributes and absorbs impact across interlinked rings, defeating cutting weapons far more effectively than solid plate of equal weight, while retaining flexibility. The mechanics were formalised only by modern materials science.

When it was established

antiquity / 1900s — Mail manufacture established in the ancient Near East; impact mechanics of interlinked structures analysed in the 20th century

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Armour was familiar technology.

Caution — read before citing

Note the stated PURPOSE - protection from your own violence - which is a moral observation rather than a technical one, and arguably the more interesting half of the ayah.

HilaliThey ask you (O Muhammad SAW) about the new moons. Say: These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage. It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc.) that you enter the houses from the back but Al-Birr (is the quality of the one) who fears Allah. So enter houses through their proper doors, and fear Allah that you may be successful.
SahihThey ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed.
PickthallThey ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons, say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage. It is not righteousness that ye go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters at certain seasons), but the righteous man is he who wardeth off (evil). So go to houses by the gates thereof, and observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful.
YusufaliThey ask thee concerning the New Moons. Say: They are but signs to mark fixed periods of time in (the affairs of) men, and for Pilgrimage. It is no virtue if ye enter your houses from the back: It is virtue if ye fear Allah. Enter houses through the proper doors: And fear Allah: That ye may prosper.
ArberryThey will question thee concerning the new moons. Say: 'They are appointed times for the people, and the Pilgrimage.' It is not piety to come to the houses from the backs of them; but piety is to be godfearing; so come to the houses by their doors, and fear God; haply so you will prosper.
The established science

Lunar phases provide a regular and observable calendrical cycle of approximately 29.53 days.

When it was established

antiquity — Known to all ancient civilisations

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Universally observable and universally used.

The established science

Iron is worked by heating to increase malleability. Mail armour requires precise and consistent link gauge to be both flexible and protective.

When it was established

antiquity / 1900s — Iron working established in the Near East from roughly 1200 BCE; metallurgical understanding of annealing formalised in the modern era

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Iron working and mail manufacture were established crafts.

Caution — read before citing

The established science

The lunar cycle produces a waning crescent that is thin, curved and yellowed - closely resembling a dried date stalk, which is curved, slender and pale.

When it was established

antiquity — Lunar phases understood since antiquity

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Directly and universally observable.

Caution — read before citing

Included for completeness. The observation is apt and the simile precise, but the phenomenon was fully known. Its value is descriptive accuracy, not foreknowledge.

The established science

Stellar positions provide a fixed reference frame for determining latitude and heading. Celestial navigation remained the primary method of open-ocean position-finding until satellite systems replaced it.

When it was established

antiquity / 1757 — Practised since antiquity by Polynesian, Arab and Mediterranean navigators; formalised by the marine sextant (John Bird, 1757)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Star navigation was actively practised in Arabia and across the Indian Ocean at the time of revelation.

The established science

Earth is an oblate spheroid rotating on its axis, so the boundary between light and dark sweeps continuously around a curved surface. The verb kawwara denotes coiling or winding one thing around another, as a turban is wound.

When it was established

240 BCE / 1522 — Eratosthenes measured Earth's circumference c.240 BCE; Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation completed 1522; rotation established by Foucault's pendulum, 1851

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Sphericity was known to Greek astronomers but was not general knowledge, and axial rotation was not demonstrated until 1851.

SahihIt is Allah who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.
PickthallAllah it is Who raised up the heavens without visible supports, then mounted the Throne, and compelled the sun and the moon to be of service, each runneth unto an appointed term; He ordereth the course; He detaileth the revelations, that haply ye may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.
YusufaliAllah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs, explaining the signs in detail, that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.
ArberryGod is He who raised up the heavens without pillars you can see, then He sat Himself upon the Throne. He subjected the sun and the moon, each one running to a term stated. He directs the affair; He distinguishes the signs; haply you will have faith in the encounter with your Lord.
The established science

Celestial bodies are held in their courses by gravitation, which is not a visible support.

When it was established

1687 — Isaac Newton, Principia Mathematica

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. The prevailing model in late antiquity involved physical celestial spheres carrying the planets.

Caution — read before citing

The phrase can also be read as 'without pillars, as you can see' - that is, with no pillars at all. Both readings are grammatically available; note the ambiguity rather than selecting silently.

HilaliAnd He it is Who has created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each in an orbit floating.
SahihAnd it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.
PickthallAnd He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They float, each in an orbit.
YusufaliIt is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course.
ArberryIt is He who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon, each swimming in a sky.
The established science

Bodies in space move in curved orbital paths governed by gravitation. The verb sabaha denotes swimming or gliding through a medium, and falak in Arabic denotes something round or a rounded course.

When it was established

1543-1687 — Copernicus (heliocentric model, 1543), Kepler (elliptical orbits, 1609), Newton (universal gravitation, 1687)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Apparent motion of sun and moon across the sky was universally observed. That the paths are true orbits governed by a force, rather than spheres carried on crystalline shells, was not established until Newton.

Caution — read before citing

The prevailing Ptolemaic model of the era also had celestial bodies on circular courses, so 'orbit' alone does not distinguish the Qur'anic statement from contemporary astronomy. The stronger observation is the verb: swimming implies motion through a medium under its own course, not being fixed to a rotating shell.

HilaliIt is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit.
SahihIt is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
PickthallIt is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.
YusufaliIt is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).
ArberryIt behoves not the sun to overtake the moon, neither does the night outstrip the day, each swimming in a sky.
The established science

Sun and moon follow independent orbital paths that do not intersect, and the day-night cycle is a continuous rotation in which neither phase can precede the other. Orbital mechanics prevents the described collisions.

When it was established

1687 — Newton's laws of motion and universal gravitation

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. That the sun and moon do not collide was evident. That their paths are governed by a calculable force was not.

Caution — read before citing

Note that the prevailing Ptolemaic system also had non-intersecting celestial paths, so this does not distinguish the Qur'anic statement from contemporary astronomy. The verb 'swimming' is the more distinctive element.

ArberryIt is He who stretched out the earth and set therein firm mountains and rivers, and of every fruit He placed there two kinds, covering the day with the night. Surely in that are signs for a people who reflect.
The established science

Flowering plants reproduce sexually, with male and female reproductive structures. Fruit is the product of that fertilisation.

When it was established

1694-1735 — Camerarius demonstrated it experimentally (1694); Linnaeus systematised plant sexual classification (1735)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Plant sexuality was unknown and, when proposed, was resisted. Date palms were artificially pollinated in Arabia by practice, which shows the effect was known empirically for that species without the mechanism being understood.

Caution — read before citing

The date-palm practice is a genuine partial counterpoint and you should raise it yourself. It shows Arabians knew male and female palms; it does not show they knew all fruiting plants were sexual.

PickthallAnd after that He spread the earth,
YusufaliAnd the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);
Arberryand the earth-after that He spread it out,
The established science

Earth is an oblate spheroid - flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator by roughly 21 kilometres. Some lexicographers connect dahaha to the root d-h-w, from which comes udhiyy, the ostrich's nest or egg-nest.

When it was established

1687-1738 — Newton predicted the oblate shape from rotation (1687); the French geodetic expeditions to Lapland and Peru confirmed it (1735-1738)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Oblateness is undetectable without precise geodetic survey.

Caution — read before citing

GRADED WEAK DELIBERATELY. The 'egg-shaped' etymology is DISPUTED - the primary and majority lexical sense of dahaha is to spread out or expand, and most classical commentators read it that way. If you argue Earth's shape from the Qur'an, argue from 39:5's takwir instead, which is far more defensible. Using this verse invites an immediate and well-founded lexical objection.

ArberryAnd the sun -- it runs to a fixed resting-place; that is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing.
The established science

The sun is not stationary. It moves through the galaxy toward the solar apex at roughly twenty kilometres per second, and orbits the galactic centre once in about 230 million years. It also has a finite lifetime and a terminal state.

When it was established

1783 / 20th century — William Herschel determined the solar apex - the sun's motion through space - in 1783; stellar evolution and the sun's finite lifespan established through 20th-century astrophysics

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Solar motion relative to other stars requires precise stellar astrometry.

Caution — read before citing

The established science

Nutrients are absorbed from the intestinal contents into the bloodstream, transported to the mammary gland, and synthesised into milk. The milk is thus derived from material positioned between gut contents and blood.

When it was established

Yusufali"The same Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold! ye kindle therewith (your own fires)!
Arberrywho has made for you out of the green tree fire and lo, from it you kindle.'
The established science

Photosynthesis stores solar energy in chemical bonds within living plant tissue; combustion releases it. The energy in fire from wood is stored sunlight.

When it was established

1771-1845 — Priestley (1771) and Ingenhousz (1779) established photosynthesis; Mayer identified it as energy conversion (1845)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. The immediate referent is the markh and 'afar trees of Arabia, used as fire drills while still green - a known local practice. The energy-storage understanding is modern.

Caution — read before citing

The literal referent is a known Arabian fire-making practice, and you should state that first. The photosynthesis layer is an added reading, not the plain sense.

The established science

Mountain roots contribute to crustal stability through isostatic equilibrium; and the distribution of continental mass affects the planet's rotational stability.

When it was established

1855 — Airy and Pratt (1855)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Crustal structure is invisible.

Caution — read before citing

Graded weak deliberately. Whether mountains stabilise the earth in any sense a geologist would endorse is genuinely disputed, and this verse is heavily attacked. Do not lead with it.

The established science

Mountains have deep crustal roots extending below them, and float in isostatic equilibrium on the denser mantle - the visible peak being a fraction of the whole structure, as a tent peg is mostly buried.

When it was established

1855 — George Airy and John Henry Pratt, independently, from gravitational anomaly measurements in the Himalayas

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Crustal roots are invisible and were entirely unknown until gravitational survey revealed them.

Caution — read before citing

MAJOR WARNING. This is among the most attacked claims in the literature. A peg is an ordinary image for a stabiliser, and 16:15's 'lest it sway' is disputed. The isostasy correspondence is real, but do not build a paper on this verse alone.

The established science

Precipitation infiltrates the ground and is stored in aquifers, which supply springs and wells. Aquifer storage is finite and can be depleted.

When it was established

1856 — Henry Darcy established the law governing flow through porous media, founding quantitative groundwater hydrology

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Wells and springs were used everywhere; that their water is stored rainfall in porous rock was not understood, and competing theories held that spring water came from the sea or was generated underground.

Caution — read before citing

The closing clause - that the water can be taken away - is uncomfortably apt given modern aquifer depletion now measured by satellite. Note it, but as an observation, not as a prediction.

Verily, in this, is a Reminder for men of understanding.
SahihDo you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. YusufaliSeest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth? Then He causes to grow, therewith, produce of various colours: then it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then He makes it dry up and crumble away. ArberryHast thou not seen how that God has sent down out of heaven water and threaded it as springs in the earth, then He brings forth therewith crops of diverse hues, then they wither, and thou seest them turning yellow, then He makes them broken orts? Surely in that is a reminder for men possessed of minds.
The established science

The complete hydrological cycle: precipitation, infiltration, groundwater flow, emergence as springs, and uptake by vegetation.

When it was established

1674-1856 — Pierre Perrault demonstrated that rainfall is sufficient to supply river flow (1674), overturning the ancient belief that rivers were fed from the sea; Darcy quantified groundwater flow (1856)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Rain and springs are visible; the connection between them was denied by ancient and medieval natural philosophy, which held that rainfall was insufficient and that rivers were fed by subterranean channels from the ocean.

Caution — read before citing

This is a better hydrology entry than it first appears, precisely because the prevailing learned opinion for the whole intervening period was the opposite. Aristotle and his successors denied the rainfall-to-river connection.

The prefrontal cortex, situated directly behind the forehead, governs planning, judgement, moral decision-making and the inhibition required to construct a deliberate falsehood.

When it was established

1848-1868 — Harlow's reports on Phineas Gage, whose personality and judgement changed after prefrontal injury (1848, 1868); systematised by Luria and Fuster in the 20th century

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Localisation of function in the brain was unknown until the 19th century.

ArberryWhomsoever God desires to guide, He expands his breast to Islam; whomsoever He desires to lead astray, He makes his breast narrow, tight, as if he were climbing to heaven. So God lays abomination upon those who believe not.
The established science

Atmospheric pressure and oxygen partial pressure fall with altitude, producing chest tightness, breathlessness and hypoxia.

When it was established

1878 — Paul Bert, La Pression Barometrique, founding high-altitude physiology

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Breathlessness on high mountains was known to travellers. That it results from reduced atmospheric pressure, and that the effect increases continuously with height, was not.

Caution — read before citing

The ayah is a simile for spiritual difficulty. Presenting it as a physiological statement overreads it. The observation that the simile is physiologically accurate is the defensible version.

ArberryAnd We loose the winds fertilising, and We send down out of heaven water, then We give it to you to drink, and you are not its treasurers.
The established science

Two established readings, both correct. Wind carries pollen and effects fertilisation in anemophilous plants. And airborne particles act as cloud condensation nuclei, without which raindrops do not form.

When it was established

1694 / 1880 — Camerarius demonstrated plant sexuality (1694); Aitken demonstrated condensation nuclei (1880)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Neither pollination nor condensation nuclei is visible to unaided observation. Plant sexuality was actively denied by naturalists into the 17th century.

Caution — read before citing

The ayah pairs the winds with the subsequent rainfall in one sentence, which suits the condensation reading; lawaqih's root meaning of impregnation suits the pollination reading. Both are defensible; say which you are arguing.

The established science

Thamud was a real North Arabian people, independently attested in Assyrian royal inscriptions, in Greek and Roman sources, and through thousands of Thamudic inscriptions. Their principal site, Hegra (Mada'in Salih), is excavated and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

When it was established

1880s onward / 715 BCE source — Thamud named in the annals of Sargon II (c.715 BCE); Hegra surveyed by Doughty (1876) and Euting, excavated systematically in the 20th and 21st centuries

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Thamud's ruins were known in Arabia and are referenced in pre-Islamic poetry, so this was within cultural memory.

Caution — read before citing

Distinguish sharply and always: Thamud's EXISTENCE is confirmed; the NARRATIVE EVENTS described are not archaeologically attested. Conflating the two is the single easiest error to attack in this whole field.

The established science

Fertilisation is the fusion of two gametes, male and female, each contributing half the genetic complement. The zygote is literally a mingling of two contributions.

When it was established

1875-1883 — Oscar Hertwig observed fertilisation in sea urchins (1876); Edouard van Beneden demonstrated equal chromosomal contribution from both parents (1883)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Gametes are microscopic. The female contribution was disputed for centuries; preformationist theories held that the entire miniature human resided in either sperm or egg alone.

Caution — read before citing

Amshaj (mingled) is restrained and defensible precisely because it claims less than the contested developmental sequence in 23:12-14. Prefer it.

The established science

Fingertip friction ridge patterns are unique to each individual, including between identical twins, and are permanent through life. They are the standard means of individual identification.

When it was established

1880-1892 — Henry Faulds and William Herschel proposed forensic use (1880); Francis Galton established uniqueness and permanence statistically (1892)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Ridge patterns are visible, but their uniqueness across all humans is a statistical fact that cannot be established by casual observation.

Caution — read before citing

The ayah's context is resurrection and reassembly, and it singles out the fingertips specifically among all body parts - which is the striking element. Do not overstate: it does not say ridges are unique, it says God can restore them precisely.

And as for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord, but as for those who disbelieve, they say: "What did Allah intend by this parable?" By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. And He misleads thereby only those who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah).
SahihIndeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,

Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? YusufaliAllah disdains not to use the similitude of things, lowest as well as highest. Those who believe know that it is truth from their Lord; but those who reject Faith say: "What means Allah by this similitude?" By it He causes many to stray, and many He leads into the right path; but He causes not to stray, except those who forsake (the path),-
ArberryGod is not ashamed to strike a similitude even of a gnat, or aught above it. As for the believers, they know it is the truth from their Lord; but as for unbelievers, they say, 'What did God desire by this for a similitude?' Thereby He leads many astray, and thereby He guides many; and thereby He leads none astray save the ungodly
The established science

The mosquito is, by mortality caused, the deadliest animal to humans - the vector for malaria, dengue, yellow fever and other diseases. It is also anatomically complex, with a specialised proboscis of multiple distinct components and anticoagulant saliva.

When it was established

1897 — Ronald Ross demonstrated mosquito transmission of malaria (Nobel Prize 1902)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Disease transmission by mosquitoes was entirely unknown; malaria was attributed to bad air, which is what the name means.

Caution — read before citing

The ayah's point is rhetorical - that no created thing is too small to serve as an illustration. It makes no claim about disease. Do not construct one; note the irony that the chosen example turned out to be the deadliest animal to humans, and leave it there.

ArberrySo today We shall deliver thee with thy body, that thou mayest be a sign to those after thee. Surely many men are heedless of Our signs.'
The established science

The bodies of the New Kingdom pharaohs were recovered, preserved, and are now studied and displayed - a literal preservation of the body as a sign to later generations.

When it was established

1881 and 1898 — The Deir el-Bahari royal cache discovered 1881; the KV35 cache discovered by Victor Loret 1898

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. The royal caches were hidden in antiquity and unknown until the 19th century.

Caution — read before citing

DO NOT cite Maurice Bucaille's claim that Merneptah's mummy shows evidence of drowning. It is not accepted by Egyptologists. Which pharaoh is intended is also not established. The defensible claim is narrow: pharaonic bodies were in fact preserved and did in fact become signs to later generations.

The established science

Animal hides and fibres provide lightweight, insulating, portable shelter materials. Wool in particular retains insulating capacity when damp and has a favourable strength-to-weight ratio, which is why it remained the dominant textile for nomadic shelter.

When it was established

1900s — Fibre science and textile physics developed through the 20th century

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

The established science

Water is the solvent of all known biochemistry; cells are predominantly water; no known organism is independent of it. Life on Earth is universally aqueous.

When it was established

1830s-1900s — Established cumulatively through cell theory (Schleiden and Schwann, 1838-39) and subsequent biochemistry

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. That living things need water was obvious. That every living thing is chiefly composed of water and that all its chemistry occurs in aqueous solution required cell theory and microscopy.

The established science

The implanted embryo is anchored in the uterine wall - a protected, stabilised location with an established blood supply. Implantation is the step at which pregnancy becomes secure, and failure of implantation is the commonest cause of very early pregnancy loss.

When it was established

1827-1900s — von Baer discovered the mammalian ovum (1827); implantation biology developed through the 20th century

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Implantation is microscopic and occurs before pregnancy is detectable by any pre-modern means.

Caution — read before citing

Qararin makin - firm lodging - is a restrained and apt description. Do not extend it into claims about the sequence in 23:14, which is separately contested.

HilaliOr [the state of a disbeliever] is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with a great wave topped by a great wave, topped by dark clouds, darkness, one above another, if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light.
SahihOr [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light.
PickthallOr as darkness on a vast, abysmal sea. There covereth him a wave, above which is a wave, above which is a cloud. Layer upon layer of darkness. When he holdeth out his hand he scarce can see it. And he for whom Allah hath not appointed light, for him there is no light.
YusufaliOr (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light!
Arberryor they are as shadows upon a sea obscure covered by a billow above which is a billow above which are clouds, shadows piled one upon another; when he puts forth his hand, wellnigh he cannot see it. And to whomsoever God assigns no light, no light has he.
The established science

Light is progressively absorbed with depth, colour by colour, until the deep ocean is entirely dark. Internal waves propagate along density interfaces beneath the surface waves, producing the described layering of wave upon wave.

When it was established

1893-1900s — Internal waves identified by Nansen ('dead water' phenomenon, 1893) and explained by Ekman (1904); light attenuation quantified through 20th-century optical oceanography

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Deep-sea darkness and subsurface internal waves are inaccessible without instruments or diving. Arabian seafaring was coastal.

Caution — read before citing

One of the better entries. The specific detail of a wave above a wave beneath the surface is not casually available.

The established science

Freshwater outflow and saline seawater meet at estuaries and maintain a sharp density interface, the salt wedge, resisting mixing.

The established science

Two separate confirmations. Historically, the Byzantines under Heraclius decisively defeated the Sasanians at Nineveh in 627 CE, within the stated window of the prophecy. Geodetically, the Dead Sea basin - the theatre of the earlier Byzantine defeat - is the lowest exposed land surface on Earth, and adna carries both 'nearest' and 'lowest'.

When it was established

627 CE / 1800s-1900s — Historical: Battle of Nineveh, 627 CE. Geodetic: Dead Sea depression surveyed and confirmed as Earth's lowest land through 19th and 20th century survey

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. That the Dead Sea region is the lowest land on the planet requires global elevation survey and could not have been known.

Caution — read before citing

One of the strongest entries here because both halves are independently checkable and dated. Note that the geodetic reading of adna depends on the double meaning, which is genuine but should be presented as a double meaning, not as the sole sense.

The established science

On the reading that these describe winds and clouds: winds scatter dust and seed, clouds carry water as a load, air masses move across the globe, and precipitation is distributed unevenly by atmospheric circulation.

When it was established

1735-1900s — Hadley described the atmospheric circulation cell (1735); global circulation established through 20th-century meteorology

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Binocular vision from paired eyes provides depth perception through stereopsis. The tongue and lips are the primary articulators of human speech - the structures whose fine motor control makes the range of human phonemes possible.

When it was established

1838 / 1900s — Wheatstone demonstrated stereopsis with the stereoscope (1838); articulatory phonetics developed through the 19th and 20th centuries

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Biological sex is determined by the chromosome carried in the sperm cell - X producing female, Y producing male. Determination therefore lies with the emitted male gamete.

When it was established

1905 — Nettie Stevens and Edmund Beecher Wilson, independently, identifying the sex chromosomes

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Wholly invisible without microscopy and cytogenetics. Across most of history, responsibility for a child's sex was attributed to the mother - a belief with severe social consequences that persisted into the modern era.

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. That the moon's light differs from the sun's was inferable from the phases and from eclipses, and was argued by Greek philosophers a millennium earlier. The mechanism of solar luminosity was not known until the 20th century.

Caution — read before citing

Verify the lexical consistency yourself before publishing: run qsearch.py on shams, qamar, diya', siraj, nur and munir across all occurrences. The argument depends on the pattern holding throughout, and that is checkable rather than assertable.

The established science

The sun is a source of light and heat - a lamp. The moon is illuminated - it gives light without generating it. The Qur'an maintains this distinction consistently across its occurrences.

When it was established

c.450 BCE / 1920s — Anaxagoras on lunar reflection; solar fusion established by Eddington and Bethe

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Inferable from the phases and from eclipses, and argued by Greek philosophers a millennium earlier.

Caution — read before citing

The strength of this claim depends on the distinction holding CONSISTENTLY throughout the Qur'an. Verify with qsearch across every occurrence of siraj, nur, munir, diya', shams and qamar before publishing - and report honestly if any instance breaks the pattern.

HilaliAnd it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain). Till when they have carried a heavy-laden cloud, We drive it to a land that is dead, then We cause water (rain) to descend thereon. Then We produce every kind of fruit therewith. Similarly, We shall raise up the dead, so that you may remember or take heed.
SahihAnd it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.
PickthallAnd He it is Who sendeth the winds as tidings heralding His mercy, till, when they bear a cloud heavy (with rain), We lead it to a dead land, and then cause water to descend thereon and thereby bring forth fruits of every kind. Thus bring We forth the dead. Haply ye may remember.
YusufaliIt is He Who sendeth the winds like heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy: when they have carried the heavy-laden clouds, We drive them to a land that is dead, make rain to descend thereon, and produce every kind of harvest therewith: thus shall We raise up the dead: perchance ye may remember.
ArberryIt is He who looses the winds, bearing good tidings before His mercy, till, when they are charged with heavy clouds, We drive it to a dead land and therewith send down water, and bring forth, therewith all the fruits. Even so We shall bring forth the dead; haply you will remember.
The established science

Frontal systems are preceded by characteristic wind shifts, which is why wind change reliably signals approaching rain. Clouds transport enormous water mass; a single cumulonimbus can hold hundreds of thousands of tonnes.

When it was established

1919-1920s — The Bergen School (Bjerknes and colleagues) established frontal theory, explaining why wind shifts precede precipitation

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. That wind precedes rain was folk knowledge everywhere. That clouds carry a measurable heavy load of water, and why wind shifts signal fronts, are modern.

Caution — read before citing

The word 'heavy' (thiqal) applied to clouds is the notable element - clouds appear weightless. But their heaviness is also inferable from the rain that falls from them.

The established science

Water evaporates from the surface, condenses, and returns as precipitation - a closed cycle. Separately, the ionosphere reflects certain radio frequencies back to the surface.

When it was established

1674 / 1902-1924 — Perrault established the rainfall cycle quantitatively (1674); the ionosphere predicted by Heaviside and Kennelly (1902) and confirmed by Appleton (1924)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Rain returning is observable; the closed cycle was not understood and was actively disputed.

Caution — read before citing

The rain reading is classical and scientifically sound. The radio-reflection reading is modern and unnecessary - reaching for it weakens rather than strengthens the point. Use the rain cycle.

YusufaliWith power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace.
ArberryAnd heaven -- We built it with might, and We extend it wide.
The established science

The universe is expanding; space itself is stretching, carrying galaxies apart.

When it was established

1929 — Edwin Hubble, from the redshift-distance relation; anticipated theoretically by Friedmann (1922) and Lemaitre (1927)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Requires spectroscopy of distant galaxies.

Caution — read before citing

Graded WEAK deliberately, and you should keep it weak. Musi'un most standardly means possessed of vast power or ample means; the expansion reading is modern and is not the majority classical reading. The root does carry the sense of making wide, so the reading is available - but a paper that presents it as the plain meaning will be corrected.

SahihAnd when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment.
PickthallAnd when We decreed death for him, nothing showed his death to them save a creeping creature of the earth which gnawed away his staff. And when he fell the jinn saw clearly how, if they had known the Unseen, they would not have continued in despised toil.
YusufaliThen, when We decreed (Solomon's) death, nothing showed them his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his staff: so when he fell down, the Jinns saw plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have tarried in the humiliating Penalty (of their Task).
ArberryAnd when We decreed that he should die, naught indicated to them that he was dead but the Beast of the Earth devouring his staff; and when he fell down, the jinn saw clearly that, had they only known the Unseen, they would not have continued in the humbling chastisement.
The established science

Termites consume wood by digesting cellulose, which they achieve through symbiotic gut microorganisms. They hollow timber from within, so a structure can appear sound until it collapses - exactly the narrative detail.

When it was established

1880s-1930s — Cellulose digestion by termite gut symbionts established by Cleveland and others from the 1920s

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Termite damage was known. That the wood is consumed from within, leaving the surface intact until failure, is the observable detail the narrative turns on.

Caution — read before citing

The narrative detail is accurate to termite behaviour. The surrounding context concerning the jinn is permanently Category 1.

The established science

Sexual reproduction with paired forms is ubiquitous across plants and animals; chromosomes occur in pairs; and in physics, particles have corresponding antiparticles.

When it was established

1694 / 1932 — Camerarius for plant sexuality (1694); Carl Anderson discovered the positron, confirming Dirac's antimatter prediction (1932)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Animal sexual pairing was obvious; plant sexuality and antimatter were not.

Caution — read before citing

The antimatter reading is anachronistic and should be presented as resonance only. The plant sexuality reading is the solid one and it is already strong.

The established science

The described sequence - wind-driven lifting, horizontal spreading, fragmentation into cells, precipitation from within the mass - matches the observed life cycle of rain-bearing cloud systems.

When it was established

The established science

Adjacent water bodies of differing salinity, temperature and density maintain sharp interfaces and resist mixing, producing haloclines, pycnoclines and estuarine salt wedges. The Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange at Gibraltar is the classic case.

When it was established

1870s-1940s — Gibraltar undercurrent characterised from the 1870s; modern physical oceanography of density interfaces developed through the early 20th century

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Visible colour and turbidity boundaries at river mouths and straits are directly observable and were remarked on by ancient sailors.

Caution — read before citing

This is the single most-cited verse in the entire scientific-miracle literature, and it is the one most easily deflated: two waters visibly refusing to mix is something any sailor at a river mouth can see. The description is accurate; it is weak as evidence of foreknowledge. Grade it honestly and your other entries gain credibility.

And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth).
YusufaliO mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much), and (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).
ArberryO men, if you are in doubt as to the Uprising, surely We created you of dust then of a sperm-drop, then of a blood clot, then of a lump of flesh, formed and unformed that We may make clear to you. And We establish in the wombs what We will, till a stated term, then We deliver you as infants, then that you may come of age; and some of you die, and some of you are kept back unto the vilest state of life, that after knowing somewhat, they may know nothing. And thou beholdest the earth blackened, then, when We send down water upon it, it quivers, and swells, and puts forth herbs of every joyous kind.
The established science

Embryonic tissue at the somite stage comprises both differentiated and as-yet-undifferentiated regions simultaneously - a genuinely accurate description of a partly-formed state.

When it was established

Caution — read before citing

The 'formed and unformed' phrase is arguably the most interesting element of the Qur'anic embryology material and is less exposed to the histological objection that the 23:14 bones-then-flesh sequence faces. If you write on embryology, consider centring this rather than 23:14.

The established science

Human embryonic development proceeds through implantation, a somite and lump stage, cartilage and bone formation, and muscle development.

When it was established

Caution — read before citing

HANDLE WITH CARE. This is the most contested claim in the entire literature. The 'bones then flesh' ordering is disputed against histology, since cartilage models and muscle precursors develop concurrently rather than sequentially. HilaliSee you not that Allah drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap of layers, and you see the rain comes forth from between them. And He sends down from the sky hail (like) mountains, (or there are in the heaven mountains of hail from where He sends down hail), and strike therewith whom He will, and averts it from whom He wills. The vivid flash of its (clouds) lightning nearly blinds the sight. [Tafsir At-Tabari].
SahihDo you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains [of clouds] within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightening almost takes away the eyesight.
PickthallHast thou not seen how Allah wafteth the clouds, then gathereth them, then maketh them layers, and thou seest the rain come forth from between them; He sendeth down from the heaven mountains wherein is hail, and smiteth therewith whom He will, and averteth it from whom He will. The flashing of His lightning all but snatcheth away the sight.
YusufaliSeest thou not that Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap? - then wilt thou see rain issue forth from their midst. And He sends down from the sky mountain masses (of clouds) wherein is hail: He strikes therewith whom He pleases and He turns it away from whom He pleases, the vivid flash of His lightning well-nigh blinds the sight.
Arberry'hast thou not seen how God drives the clouds, then composes them, then converts them into a mass, then thou seest the rain issuing out of the midst of them? And He sends down out of heaven mountains, wherein is hail, so that He smites whom He will with it, and turns it aside from whom He will; wellnigh the gleam of His lightning snatches away the sight.
The established science

Cumulonimbus formation proceeds exactly in this order: separate cumulus cells are driven together, merge, build vertically into towering heaps, and precipitation falls from within the mass. Hail forms in the upper reaches of these mountain-like structures.

When it was established

1940s-1950s — The Thunderstorm Project (Byers and Braham, 1946-49), the first systematic aircraft and radar study of thunderstorm structure

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Cloud building and rain are visible from the ground. The internal structure, the merging sequence and hail's formation aloft required aircraft and radar.

The established science

The Marib Dam in Yemen was one of the great engineering works of the ancient world, sustaining the agriculture of the Sabaean kingdom. Its repeated breaches and eventual final collapse are recorded in Sabaean inscriptions and evidenced archaeologically.

When it was established

1950s onward — Systematic archaeological investigation of Marib from the mid-20th century; the site has been excavated and the Sabaean inscriptions recording dam repairs read

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. The dam's collapse was within cultural memory in Arabia, so this is historical rather than concealed knowledge. Its value is verification of a historical claim, not disclosure of an unknown one.

Caution — read before citing

Do not present this as hidden knowledge revealed. Present it as a historical claim that archaeology has since verified - which is a legitimate and useful category of confirmation.

HilaliIndeed We have sent Our Messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance (justice) that mankind may keep up justice. And We brought forth iron wherein is mighty power (in matters of war), as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help Him (His religion), and His Messengers in the unseen. Verily, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.
SahihWe have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
PickthallWe verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.
YusufaliWe sent aforetime our messengers with Clear Signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down Iron, in which is (material for) mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, Unseen, Him and His messengers: For Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might (and able to enforce His Will).
ArberryIndeed, We sent Our Messengers with the clear signs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance so that men might uphold justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great might, and many uses for men, and so that God might know who helps Him, and His Messengers, in the Unseen. Surely God is All-strong, All-mighty.
The established science

Iron is not produced by ordinary planetary processes. It is forged in stellar cores and dispersed by supernovae; Earth's iron therefore has an extraterrestrial origin, and much of the accessible crustal iron arrived through late accretion.

When it was established

1957 — Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle - the B2FH paper on stellar nucleosynthesis

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Meteoritic iron was known and used in antiquity, which is a genuine partial counterpoint - iron did visibly fall from the sky. But that all iron originates outside Earth was unknowable before 1957.

Caution — read before citing

DO NOT USE the surah-57 / iron-57 numerology, or the atomic-number-26 argument. Both require cherry-picking and will be dismantled instantly. The nucleosynthesis point stands on its own and is far stronger without them.

Earth's atmosphere ablates incoming meteoroids, the ozone layer absorbs ultraviolet radiation, and the magnetosphere deflects the solar wind and charged cosmic radiation.

When it was established

1913-1958 — Ozone layer identified by Fabry and Buisson (1913); Van Allen radiation belts and the magnetosphere discovered by Van Allen via Explorer 1 (1958)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Meteors burning up were visible, but atmospheric shielding from radiation was entirely unknown before the 20th century.

Arberrytill, when they came on the Valley of Ants, an ant said, 'Ants, enter your dwelling-places, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you, being unaware!'
The established science

Ants communicate chemically through pheromones, including alarm signals that trigger retreat into the nest, and are organised in colonies with division of labour.

When it was established

1959 — E. O. Wilson identified and characterised ant trail and alarm pheromones

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Ant colonies and coordinated behaviour are visible; chemical signalling as the mechanism was unknown.

Caution — read before citing

Note the narrative detail that the crushing would be unintentional - a striking element. Report it as narrative precision, not as entomology. Note also that the Arabic uses a feminine verb for the speaking ant, and that ant workers are female.

The established science

The camel is among the most specialised large mammals known: it tolerates body temperature swings that would kill most mammals, has oval red blood cells that resist rupture on rapid rehydration, produces highly concentrated urine, recovers moisture from exhaled breath through its nasal passages, and stores fat rather than water in its hump.

When it was established

1950s-1960s — Knut and Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen's field physiology of the camel

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Camels' endurance was universally known in Arabia. The physiological mechanisms behind it were not established until the mid-20th century.

Caution — read before citing

The ayah says only 'look at how they are created' - it makes no specific physiological claim. Present it as an invitation to observe that the subsequent science richly rewarded, not as a stated fact.

The established science

The observable universe expanded from an extremely hot, dense initial state; structure - galaxies, stars, planets - condensed out of an initially undifferentiated condition.

When it was established

1927-1965 — Lemaitre proposed the primeval atom (1927); Hubble measured expansion (1929); Penzias and Wilson detected the cosmic microwave background (1965), confirming the hot early phase

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Entirely inaccessible without 20th-century instrumentation.

Caution — read before citing

Separation cosmogonies - an original unity split into sky and earth - are ancient and widespread, appearing in Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Polynesian traditions. This is the standard objection and it is correct. Claim resonance, not identity.

The established science

Before stars formed, the universe consisted of diffuse neutral gas - hydrogen and helium - with no luminous structure.

When it was established

The established science

Matter is composed of structures far smaller than the smallest visible speck: molecules, atoms, nuclei, protons and neutrons, and quarks.

When it was established

1803-1968 — Dalton's atomic theory (1803); Thomson discovered the electron (1897); Rutherford the nucleus (1911); quarks confirmed by deep inelastic scattering at SLAC (1968)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Nothing below the visible speck is accessible without instruments.

Caution — read before citing

Dharrah means a mote, a speck of dust, or an ant - NOT the modern atom, which is a later coinage. Do not translate it as 'atom' and then claim atomic theory. The strength of this entry is the explicit clause 'nor anything smaller than that', which asserts the existence of the sub-visible without naming it.

ArberryAnd of His signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and the variety of your tongues and hues. Surely in that are signs for all living beings.
The established science

Human populations vary continuously in pigmentation and in language, and both are presented as natural signs rather than as grounds of hierarchy.

When it was established

1972 — Richard Lewontin demonstrated that the overwhelming majority of human genetic variation occurs WITHIN populations rather than between them

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Plainly observable then. Human variation in colour and language is directly observable. The scientific content is the finding that this variation does not partition humanity into discrete biological races.

Caution — read before citing

The correspondence is with the moral framing - variation as a sign, not a ranking - which modern genetics independently supports. That is an honest and strong argument. Do not claim the ayah anticipated population genetics.

The established science

Fetal hearing becomes functional well before vision. The auditory system responds to sound from roughly the 24th to 26th week of gestation; the visual system is not functional until after birth, since the eyes are closed for much of gestation and there is nothing to see.

When it was established

1980s — Established through fetal response studies from the 1960s onward; heart-rate and movement responses to sound documented systematically in the 1980s

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Fetal sensory development is inaccessible without modern monitoring.

Caution — read before citing

The point is the ORDER - hearing named before sight - and the Qur'an maintains that order consistently. VERIFY THIS YOURSELF with qsearch.py across 32:9, 23:78, 67:23, 76:2 and 46:26 before publishing. The argument depends entirely on the consistency, and consistency is checkable. If a single instance reverses the order, say so.

The established science

Continental plates carrying mountain ranges move continuously at rates of a few centimetres per year - imperceptible to observation but real and now measured directly.

When it was established

1912-1968 / 1980s — Wegener (1912); plate tectonics consensus (1968); direct measurement by satellite geodesy and GPS from the 1980s

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Plate motion is far too slow for unaided observation and was denied by geologists as recently as the 1950s.

Caution — read before citing

The immediate context of this ayah is the Day of Judgment, so the eschatological reading is available and is held by many commentators. Present both readings; do not assert the tectonic one alone.

The established science

Escaping Earth requires overcoming gravity with sufficient energy, and interstellar distances impose limits that no achievable technology overcomes. Accelerating cosmic expansion places most of the observable universe permanently beyond reach.

When it was established

1687 / 1998 — Newton established escape velocity conditions (1687); accelerating expansion discovered by Riess, Perlmutter and Schmidt (1998)

The established science

Many animal species live in structured societies with social learning, transmitted traditions, and communication systems - properties once thought uniquely human.

When it was established

1999 — Whiten and colleagues documented distinct cultural traditions across chimpanzee populations in Nature (1999); subsequently extended to cetaceans, corvids and others

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. Herds, flocks and colonies are visible. Culture, social transmission and referential signalling are not, and were denied by science for most of the 20th century.

The established science

Two confirmations. Forager bees are female - the Arabic verbs and pronouns addressing the bee are feminine throughout. And honey has genuine antimicrobial and wound-healing properties, now used clinically as medical-grade honey.

When it was established

1609 / 1990s-2000s — Charles Butler established that the colony is led by a queen and that workers are female (1609); medical-grade honey established in modern wound care through clinical trials from the 1990s

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Not observable in the 7th century. Bee sex was misunderstood for centuries - the colony was widely believed to be led by a king. Honey's folk use as a remedy was widespread, but its antimicrobial mechanism is modern.

Caution — read before citing

The grammatical gender point is genuine but must be stated carefully: Arabic grammatical gender does not always track biological sex, so verify the forms and present the argument as a consistent pattern rather than a single instance.

The established science

Language is the trait most sharply distinguishing humans from other animals. No other species has open-ended, recursive, symbolic language, and the capacity is anatomically and neurologically supported by structures unique to humans in their configuration.

When it was established

1861-2001 — Broca localised speech production (1861); Wernicke comprehension (1874); the FOXP2 gene linked to speech and language disorder (2001)

Could a 7th-century observer have known this?

Partly observable. That humans speak and animals do not was obvious. That the capacity has specific neural and genetic substrates was not.

Caution — read before citing

The ORIGIN of language remains unexplained, which is why this ayah also appears in Category 5. What is confirmed is the neural and genetic basis of the capacity, not how it arose.

Integrity statement

Every Arabic quotation and every English rendering was pulled live from the project corpus by ayah key at build time. No scripture here was transcribed by hand. The corpus passed a build gate requiring exactly 114 surahs, 6,236 ayat, agreement between the Uthmani and simple-clean texts, and per-surah counts matching the canonical table.

The build refuses to run if any entry lacks a strength grade or an observability declaration. That refusal is deliberate: an ungraded entry is how a list like this quietly becomes propaganda.
