بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلْعَصْرِ
By the passing of time. Both traditions take the oath at its widest - by the age itself, night following day - and both give the same reason for swearing by it: what passes in time is the lesson, because time is the room in which everything a person does gets done. The sura is named from this one word.
اللہ تعالیٰ ”عصر“ کی قسم کھاتا ہے، یعنی زمانے کی اور اُس میں حالات کے بدلتے اور پلٹتے رہنے کی۔ رات اور دن کا گزرنا اور اُن میں پیش آنے والی عبرتیں اُس کی عظیم قدرت پر گواہ ہیں۔ اور یہی زمانہ بندوں کے اعمال کا ظرف اور اُن کا اصل سرمایہ بھی ہے — تو مناسب ہوا کہ اُسی کی قسم کھا کر آگے نفع اور نقصان کی بات کی جائے۔
