بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ
Have you not seen what your Lord did with the companions of the elephant? The commentaries gloss the seeing as knowing, since what is asked about was over long before, and the question as put to make the hearer wonder at it. The sura is named from the elephant, a word that stands nowhere else in the Qur'an.
سوال اقرار اور تعجب کے لیے ہے، اور یہاں ”دیکھنے“ سے مراد علم اور یقین ہے۔ ہاتھی والوں کا واقعہ عربوں میں اتنا مشہور اور متواتر تھا کہ وہ اسی سے تاریخ شمار کرتے تھے اور کہتے تھے ”عامُ الفیل“۔ مطلب یہ ہے کہ اے رسول، آپ کو معلوم ہے کہ آپ کے رب نے اُن کے ساتھ کیا کیا جو کعبہ ڈھانے کے ارادے سے آئے تھے۔
