وَلَقَدِ ٱسْتُهْزِئَ بِرُسُلٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَمْلَيْتُ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثُمَّ أَخَذْتُهُمْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ
Messengers before you were mocked, and I gave those who refused a long rope, and then I seized them — and how was My punishment? The commentaries read it as consolation for the Prophet and warning to those mocking him: the delay was never a reprieve.
