وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِى لَشَدِيدٌ
And when your Lord gave notice: if you are thankful I will give you more, and if you are ungrateful My punishment is severe. The commentaries read the two halves as unequal on purpose — the increase is stated outright and named, while what follows ingratitude is left as the bare fact of a severe punishment.
اور جب تمہارے رب نے اعلان کیا: اگر تم شکر کرو گے تو میں تمہیں مزید دوں گا، اور اگر تم ناشکری کرو گے تو میرا عذاب سخت ہے۔ مفسرین ان دونوں حصوں کو جان بوجھ کر غیر مساوی سمجھتے ہیں — اضافے کا وعدہ کھلے طور پر اور نام لے کر کیا گیا ہے، جبکہ ناشکری کے بعد جو کچھ آتا ہے وہ صرف سخت عذاب کی خالی حقیقت کے طور پر چھوڑا گیا ہے۔
