إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِّلَّهِ حَنِيفًا وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
Abraham was a whole community in himself — the commentaries gloss the word as a leader to be followed, in whom the qualities of good were gathered — devoutly obedient to God, turning away from everything else towards the one God; and he was not one of those who set up partners.
بے شک ابراہیم اپنی ذات میں ایک پوری امت تھے، اللہ کے فرمانبردار، ہر باطل سے کترا کر ایک اللہ کی طرف جھکنے والے، اور وہ مشرکوں میں سے نہ تھے۔ مفسرین امت کے لفظ کو یوں سمجھتے ہیں کہ ان میں خیر کی وہ ساری خوبیاں جمع تھیں جو عام طور پر ایک پوری قوم میں پائی جاتی ہیں۔
