قَدْ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنْيَٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّقْفُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Those before them schemed, and God came at their building from the foundations, and the roof fell in on them from above, and the punishment came at them from where they did not expect it. The commentaries note where it struck: not the top of what they built, but what it stood on.
ان سے پہلے لوگوں نے بھی مکر کیا تھا، تو اللہ نے ان کی عمارت کو بنیادوں سے ہی اکھاڑ دیا، پھر ان پر چھت اوپر سے آ گری، اور ان پر عذاب وہاں سے آیا جہاں سے انہیں گمان بھی نہ تھا۔ مفسرین اس بات پر توجہ دلاتے ہیں کہ عذاب نے ان کی عمارت کی چوٹی کو نہیں بلکہ اس بنیاد کو نشانہ بنایا جس پر وہ کھڑی تھی۔
