بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ الٓمٓ
Alif, Lam, Mim - three letters of the Arabic alphabet, recited one by one and not as a word. The commentaries agree on what they do not claim: God knows best what He intends by them. Twenty-nine surahs open with letters like these, and this one is named al-Baqarah, the Cow, after the story told later in it.
الف، لام، میم — عربی حروفِ تہجی کے تین حروف ہیں جنہیں الگ الگ پڑھا جاتا ہے، ایک لفظ کی طرح نہیں۔ مفسرین اس بات پر متفق ہیں کہ ان کا صحیح مطلب کیا ہے، یہ کوئی دعویٰ نہیں کرتے — اللہ ہی بہتر جانتا ہے کہ اس سے کیا مراد ہے۔ قرآن کی انتیس سورتیں ایسے ہی حروف سے شروع ہوتی ہیں، اور یہ سورت بعد میں بیان ہونے والے گائے کے قصے کی نسبت سے البقرہ یعنی گائے کہلاتی ہے۔
