وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَٰكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِّتَكُونُوا۟ شُهَدَآءَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ ٱلرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا وَمَا جَعَلْنَا ٱلْقِبْلَةَ ٱلَّتِى كُنتَ عَلَيْهَآ إِلَّا لِنَعْلَمَ مَن يَتَّبِعُ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِمَّن يَنقَلِبُ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ وَإِن كَانَتْ لَكَبِيرَةً إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَٰنَكُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِٱلنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ
And so We have made you a middle community, so that you may be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger may be a witness over you. And We appointed the direction you used to face only so as to know who follows the Messenger from who turns back on his heels. It was indeed a heavy thing, except for those God guided. And God was never going to let your faith go to waste - God is Kind and Merciful to people. The last sentence answers a question that was actually asked: what of those who had died praying towards the first direction.
اور اسی طرح ہم نے تمہیں ایک درمیانی امت بنایا، تاکہ تم لوگوں پر گواہ بنو اور رسول تم پر گواہ بنیں۔ اور ہم نے وہ قبلہ جس پر آپ پہلے تھے صرف اس لیے مقرر کیا تاکہ ہم جان لیں کہ کون رسول کی پیروی کرتا ہے اور کون اپنی ایڑیوں پر پلٹ جاتا ہے۔ اور یہ یقیناً ایک بھاری چیز تھی سوائے ان لوگوں کے جنہیں اللہ نے ہدایت دی۔ اور اللہ ایسا نہ تھا کہ تمہارا ایمان ضائع کر دیتا؛ بےشک اللہ لوگوں پر بہت شفیق، نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔ آخری جملہ اس سوال کا جواب ہے جو واقعی پوچھا گیا تھا: ان لوگوں کا کیا ہوگا جو پہلے قبلے کی طرف رخ کر کے نماز پڑھتے ہوئے فوت ہو گئے۔
