لَّيْسَ ٱلْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلْبِرَّ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ وَٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ وَءَاتَى ٱلْمَالَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ ذَوِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينَ وَٱبْنَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَٱلسَّآئِلِينَ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلْمُوفُونَ بِعَهْدِهِمْ إِذَا عَٰهَدُوا۟ وَٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ فِى ٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ وَحِينَ ٱلْبَأْسِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces east or west. Righteousness is one who believes in God and the Last Day and the angels and the Book and the prophets; and gives wealth, despite loving it, to relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveller and those who ask, and for freeing slaves; and establishes the prayer, and gives the zakat; and those who keep their agreement when they make one; and the patient in hardship and in illness and at the time of fighting. Those are the ones who have been true, and those are the ones who guard themselves. The argument about direction is answered with a list in which direction does not appear at all.
نیکی یہ نہیں کہ تم اپنے چہرے مشرق یا مغرب کی طرف پھیر لو۔ بلکہ نیکی یہ ہے کہ کوئی شخص اللہ، یومِ آخرت، فرشتوں، کتاب اور نبیوں پر ایمان لائے؛ اور مال کو، اس سے محبت رکھنے کے باوجود، رشتہ داروں، یتیموں، مسکینوں، مسافروں اور مانگنے والوں کو دے، اور غلام آزاد کرانے میں خرچ کرے؛ اور نماز قائم کرے اور زکوٰۃ دے؛ اور جو اپنا عہد پورا کرنے والے ہوں جب عہد باندھیں؛ اور تنگدستی، بیماری اور لڑائی کے وقت صبر کرنے والے ہوں۔ یہی وہ لوگ ہیں جنہوں نے سچ کہا، اور یہی لوگ متقی ہیں۔ سمت کے بارے میں جو بحث تھی اس کا جواب ایک ایسی فہرست سے دیا گیا ہے جس میں سمت کا ذکر تک نہیں ہے۔
