أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لِنَبِىٍّ لَّهُمُ ٱبْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَٰتِلْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَٰتِلُوا۟ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا لَنَآ أَلَّا نُقَٰتِلَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَٰرِنَا وَأَبْنَآئِنَا فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
Have you not considered the chiefs of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, 'Appoint a king for us and we will fight in the way of God'? He said, 'Is it possible that, if fighting were prescribed for you, you would not fight?' They said, 'And why would we not fight in the way of God, when we have been driven from our homes and our children?' But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, all but a few of them. And God knows the wrongdoers. The prophet's question was answered with indignation, and then answered again by what they actually did.
کیا آپ نے موسیٰ کے بعد بنی اسرائیل کے سرداروں پر غور نہیں کیا، جب انہوں نے اپنے ایک نبی سے کہا: 'ہمارے لیے ایک بادشاہ مقرر کر دیجیے تاکہ ہم اللہ کی راہ میں لڑیں'؟ اس نے کہا: 'کیا ہو سکتا ہے کہ اگر تم پر لڑنا فرض کر دیا جائے تو تم نہ لڑو؟' انہوں نے کہا: 'ہم اللہ کی راہ میں کیوں نہ لڑیں جبکہ ہمیں ہمارے گھروں اور ہمارے بچوں سے نکال دیا گیا ہے؟' پھر جب ان پر لڑنا فرض کر دیا گیا تو وہ منہ پھیر گئے، سوائے ان میں سے چند کے۔ اور اللہ ظالموں کو خوب جانتا ہے۔ نبی کے سوال کا جواب پہلے غصے سے دیا گیا، اور پھر دوبارہ اس چیز سے دیا گیا جو انہوں نے حقیقت میں کیا۔
