قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُۥ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَٰذَا فَسْـَٔلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ يَنطِقُونَ
He answered: rather the biggest of them did it - so ask them, if they can speak. The commentaries take the whole sentence together and not the first half alone: everything he said hangs on the condition that idols can speak, and they cannot, so nothing false was said and the point was driven home.
انہوں نے جواب دیا: بلکہ یہ کام تو انہی کے سب سے بڑے بت نے کیا ہے — تم خود ہی ان سے پوچھ لو، اگر وہ بول سکتے ہوں۔ مفسرین اس پورے جملے کو ایک ساتھ لیتے ہیں، آدھا جملہ الگ کر کے نہیں: ابراہیم کی ساری بات اسی شرط پر ٹکی ہے کہ بت بول سکتے ہوں، اور وہ بول نہیں سکتے، اس لیے کوئی جھوٹ نہیں کہا گیا اور بات پوری طرح ثابت ہو گئی۔
