وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا۟ وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ قَٰتِلُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوِ ٱدْفَعُوا۟ قَالُوا۟ لَوْ نَعْلَمُ قِتَالًا لَّٱتَّبَعْنَٰكُمْ هُمْ لِلْكُفْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُمْ لِلْإِيمَٰنِ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِم مَّا لَيْسَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَكْتُمُونَ
And so that He might mark out those who played the hypocrite. They were told: come, fight in the way of God, or at least defend; they said: if we knew fighting would happen, we would have followed you. That day they were nearer to refusal than to belief, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts — and God knows best what they conceal. The commentaries name the withdrawal together: Abdullah ibn Ubayy turning back with his men.
اور تاکہ وہ منافقت کرنے والوں کو بھی ظاہر کر دے۔ ان سے کہا گیا: آؤ، اللہ کی راہ میں لڑو، یا کم از کم دفاع ہی کرو؛ انہوں نے کہا: اگر ہمیں معلوم ہوتا کہ لڑائی ہوگی تو ہم ضرور تمہارے ساتھ آتے۔ اس دن وہ ایمان کی نسبت کفر کے زیادہ قریب تھے، اپنے مونہوں سے وہ بات کہتے تھے جو ان کے دلوں میں نہیں تھی — اور اللہ خوب جانتا ہے جو کچھ وہ چھپاتے ہیں۔ مفسرین اس واپسی کا نام لے کر ذکر کرتے ہیں: عبداللہ بن ابی اپنے آدمیوں کے ساتھ پیچھے پلٹ گیا۔
