وَقَالَت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَجْهَ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱكْفُرُوٓا۟ ءَاخِرَهُۥ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
A party of the People of the Scripture said: believe in what was sent down on the believers at the start of the day, and refuse it at its end, so that they may turn back. The commentaries describe the same manoeuvre: a staged conversion and a staged desertion, designed to plant doubt in the believers about their own religion.
