يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا يَحِلُّ لَكُمْ أَن تَرِثُوا۟ ٱلنِّسَآءَ كَرْهًا وَلَا تَعْضُلُوهُنَّ لِتَذْهَبُوا۟ بِبَعْضِ مَآ ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ إِلَّآ أَن يَأْتِينَ بِفَٰحِشَةٍ مُّبَيِّنَةٍ وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ فَإِن كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تَكْرَهُوا۟ شَيْـًٔا وَيَجْعَلَ ٱللَّهُ فِيهِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا
You who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, nor to pressure them so as to take back part of what you gave them, unless they commit a clear indecency. And live with them in kindness; if you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good. The commentaries carry the same practice it abolished: a dead man's kin treating his widow as part of the estate.
اے ایمان والو، تمہارے لیے جائز نہیں کہ تم عورتوں کو زبردستی میراث کی طرح اپنا لو، اور نہ ہی انہیں تنگ کرو تاکہ جو کچھ تم نے انہیں دیا تھا اس میں سے کچھ واپس لے لو، الا یہ کہ وہ کھلی بےحیائی کا ارتکاب کریں۔ اور ان کے ساتھ اچھے طریقے سے زندگی گزارو، اور اگر تمہیں وہ ناپسند ہوں تو ممکن ہے کہ تم کسی چیز کو ناپسند کرو اور اللہ نے اسی میں بہت بھلائی رکھی ہو۔ مفسرین اسی رواج کا ذکر کرتے ہیں جسے اس آیت نے ختم کیا: مرنے والے کے رشتہ دار اس کی بیوہ کو ترکے کا حصہ سمجھ کر اپنے قبضے میں لے لیتے تھے۔
