يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا۟ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَنْ أَلْقَىٰٓ إِلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَٰمَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَٰلِكَ كُنتُم مِّن قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا
You who believe, when you go out in the way of God, make certain; and do not say to one who offers you peace: you are not a believer — seeking the passing goods of this life, when with God are abundant gains. You were like that before, and God favoured you; so make certain. God is aware of what you do. The commentaries carry the same occasion: a man greeted a passing detachment with peace and was killed for his flock, the greeting taken for a trick.
اے ایمان والو، جب تم اللہ کی راہ میں نکلو تو خوب تحقیق کر لیا کرو، اور جو تمہیں سلام کرے اس سے یہ مت کہو کہ تم مومن نہیں ہو، تم دنیا کی زندگی کا سامان چاہتے ہو، حالانکہ اللہ کے پاس بہت سی غنیمتیں ہیں۔ تم بھی پہلے ایسے ہی تھے پھر اللہ نے تم پر احسان کیا، سو خوب تحقیق کر لیا کرو۔ بےشک اللہ تمہارے اعمال سے خوب باخبر ہے۔ مفسرین یہی واقعہ بیان کرتے ہیں: ایک شخص نے گزرتے ہوئے دستے کو سلام کیا تو اسے اس کی بکریوں کی خاطر مار ڈالا گیا، اور سلام کو محض ایک چال سمجھا گیا۔
