وَلَقَدْ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِيثَٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَبَعَثْنَا مِنْهُمُ ٱثْنَىْ عَشَرَ نَقِيبًا وَقَالَ ٱللَّهُ إِنِّى مَعَكُمْ لَئِنْ أَقَمْتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَيْتُمُ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَءَامَنتُم بِرُسُلِى وَعَزَّرْتُمُوهُمْ وَأَقْرَضْتُمُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا لَّأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنكُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ وَلَأُدْخِلَنَّكُمْ جَنَّٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ فَمَن كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ
God took the covenant of the Children of Israel, and We raised among them twelve chiefs. And God said: I am with you. If you establish the prayer, give the zakat, believe in My messengers and support them, and lend God a beautiful loan, I will wipe away your evil deeds and admit you to Gardens with rivers running beneath them. Whoever of you refuses after that has strayed from the level path. The commentaries describe the office the same way: one man from each tribe, answerable for what his people did.
اللہ نے بنی اسرائیل سے عہد لیا اور ہم نے ان میں سے بارہ نقیب مقرر کیے۔ اللہ نے فرمایا: میں تمہارے ساتھ ہوں، اگر تم نماز قائم کرو، زکوٰۃ دو، میرے رسولوں پر ایمان لاؤ اور ان کی مدد کرو، اور اللہ کو اچھا قرض دو تو میں تمہاری برائیاں مٹا دوں گا اور تمہیں ان جنتوں میں داخل کروں گا جن کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہیں۔ جو اس کے بعد انکار کرے وہ سیدھے راستے سے بھٹک گیا۔ مفسرین نے اس عہدے کو یوں بیان کیا ہے کہ ہر قبیلے سے ایک آدمی مقرر تھا جو اپنی قوم کے کاموں کا ذمہ دار ہوتا تھا۔
