وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ
How many generations before them were destroyed, stronger than these in their grip on things, who ranged through the lands at will. The commentaries take the closing question as put to everyone: was any escape found - by them, or by anyone else?
