فَمَا ٱسْتَطَٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ
They were not able to rise, nor could they defend themselves. The commentaries take both halves at their plainest: they did not get up from where they fell, and there was nothing they could do to keep the punishment off.
وہ نہ اٹھ سکے اور نہ ہی اپنا دفاع کر سکے۔ مفسرین نے دونوں حصوں کو انتہائی سیدھے معنوں میں لیا ہے: وہ اس جگہ سے اٹھ ہی نہیں سکے جہاں وہ گرے تھے، اور ان کے پاس عذاب کو روکنے کے لیے کچھ بھی کرنے کی طاقت نہیں بچی تھی۔
