إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
They are only names, which you and your fathers gave them, and God has sent down no authority for them. They follow only guesswork and what their own souls desire, and guidance has already reached them from their Lord. The commentaries put it plainly: calling a thing a god does not make it one, and the name carries none of what is claimed by it.
یہ تو محض چند نام ہیں جو تم اور تمہارے باپ دادا نے رکھ لیے ہیں، اور اللہ نے ان کے لیے کوئی دلیل نازل نہیں کی۔ وہ صرف قیاس آرائی اور اپنے نفس کی خواہش کی پیروی کرتے ہیں، حالانکہ ان کے پاس ان کے رب کی طرف سے ہدایت پہنچ چکی ہے۔ مفسرین نے اس بات کو صاف الفاظ میں بیان کیا ہے: کسی چیز کو خدا کہہ دینے سے وہ خدا نہیں بن جاتی، اور نام میں وہ کچھ نہیں ہوتا جس کا دعویٰ اس کے ذریعے کیا جاتا ہے۔
