إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Before that they were people of ease. The commentaries gloss the word as living softly, and read it as the cause and not merely the background: comfort left them nothing to be shaken by and no reason to look.
