لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
If We willed, We would make it bitter - will you not then give thanks? The commentaries gloss the word as water gone undrinkable, and read the closing question as the point of the whole sequence: what is asked for is thanks, not assent.
اگر ہم چاہیں تو اسے کھارا اور کڑوا بنا دیں - تو پھر تم شکر ادا کیوں نہیں کرتے؟ مفسرین اس لفظ کی تشریح ایسے پانی سے کرتے ہیں جو پینے کے قابل نہ رہے، اور آخری سوال کو اس پوری ترتیب کا اصل مقصد سمجھتے ہیں: مطلوب شکر ہے، محض تسلیم کر لینا نہیں۔
