يُنَادُونَهُمْ أَلَمْ نَكُن مَّعَكُمْ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَلَٰكِنَّكُمْ فَتَنتُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ وَٱرْتَبْتُمْ وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْأَمَانِىُّ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَغَرَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْغَرُورُ
They will call out to them: Were we not with you? They will say: Yes, but you led yourselves into temptation, and you waited, and you doubted, and false hopes deceived you until the command of God came, and the deceiver deceived you about God. The commentaries answer each word in the list: waiting for the turn to go against the believers, doubting the religion itself, the hopes that kept them going, and the command of God that came as death.
منافقین مومنوں کو پکار کر کہیں گے: کیا ہم تمہارے ساتھ نہ تھے؟ بیان القرآن کے مطابق ان کا مطلب یہ ہوگا کہ ہم تو دنیا میں تمہارے ساتھ مسجدِ نبوی میں نمازیں پڑھا کرتے تھے اور عیدوں کی نمازوں میں بھی تمہارے ساتھ ہوتے تھے۔ جواب دیا جائے گا: ہاں، مگر تم نے خود اپنے آپ کو فتنے میں ڈالا، انتظار کیا، شک کیا، اور جھوٹی امیدوں نے تمہیں دھوکا دیا یہاں تک کہ اللہ کا حکم، یعنی موت، آ گئی، اور دھوکے باز نے تمہیں اللہ کے بارے میں دھوکا دیا۔ احسن البیان وضاحت کرتے ہیں کہ یہ انتظار دراصل یہ تھا کہ شاید مسلمان کسی گردش یا مصیبت کا شکار ہو جائیں، اور شک سے مراد یہ کہ تم نے اپنے دلوں میں کفر اور نفاق چھپا رکھا تھا۔
