أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَٰسِقُونَ
Has the time not come for those who believe, that their hearts should be humbled at the remembrance of God and at the truth that has come down, and that they should not be like those given the Book before them, whose term ran long and whose hearts then hardened, and many of them have left obedience? The commentaries gloss the humbling as the heart going soft - open to being told something - and read the warning as being about time itself: what lets a heart harden is the stretch that passes between the message and the hearer.
اس آیت میں مومنوں سے سوال کیا گیا ہے کہ کیا ابھی وہ وقت نہیں آیا کہ اللہ کے ذکر اور اس حق کی یاد سے، جو نازل ہوا، ان کے دل نرم اور جھکے ہوئے ہو جائیں، اور وہ ان لوگوں جیسے نہ ہو جائیں جنہیں ان سے پہلے کتاب دی گئی تھی، جن پر مدت لمبی ہو گئی تو ان کے دل سخت ہو گئے، اور ان میں سے اکثر نافرمان نکلے۔ احسن البیان کے مطابق خطاب اہل ایمان سے ہے، اور خشوع کا مطلب دلوں کا نرم ہو کر اللہ کی طرف جھک جانا ہے، اور حق سے مراد قرآن کریم ہے، اور پہلے کتاب پانے والوں سے مراد یہود و نصاریٰ ہیں۔ زمخشری ایک روایت نقل کرتے ہیں کہ صحابہ مکہ میں تنگ دستی میں تھے، پھر ہجرت کے بعد جب انہیں رزق اور نعمت ملی تو کچھ سستی آ گئی، تو یہ آیت نازل ہوئی۔ ابن مسعود کا قول بھی نقل ہوا ہے کہ ہمارے اسلام لانے اور اس عتاب کے درمیان زیادہ وقت نہیں گزرا تھا۔
