ٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ وَزِينَةٌ وَتَفَاخُرٌۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَتَكَاثُرٌ فِى ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَوْلَٰدِ كَمَثَلِ غَيْثٍ أَعْجَبَ ٱلْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُۥ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَٰمًا وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٌ وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ
Know that the life of this world is only play, and distraction, and adornment, and boasting among yourselves, and rivalry in wealth and children - like rain whose growth pleases the tillers, then it dries, and you see it turning yellow, then it becomes broken chaff. And in the hereafter there is severe punishment, and forgiveness from God and good pleasure. And the life of this world is nothing but the goods of delusion. The commentaries take the six words as a list in the order a life actually meets them, and read the likeness as being about the turn in it: what is described is not something worthless but something that pleases, and then goes.
جان لو کہ دنیا کی زندگی محض کھیل، تماشا، سجاوٹ، آپس میں فخر جتانا، اور مال و اولاد میں ایک دوسرے سے بڑھنے کی کوشش ہے، جیسے بارش جس کی پیداوار کسانوں کو خوش کر دے، پھر وہ سوکھ جائے اور تم اسے زرد دیکھو، پھر وہ چورا چورا ہو جائے۔ اور آخرت میں سخت عذاب بھی ہے اور اللہ کی طرف سے مغفرت اور رضا بھی، اور دنیا کی زندگی دھوکے کے سامان کے سوا کچھ نہیں۔ زمخشری کی تشریح کے مطابق دنیا کھیل، لہو، زینت، فخر اور تکاثر جیسی حقیر چیزوں کے سوا کچھ نہیں، جبکہ آخرت سخت عذاب، مغفرت اور اللہ کی رضا جیسی عظیم چیزوں پر مشتمل ہے، اور دنیا کی حالت اور اس کے تیزی سے ختم ہونے کو اس بارش سے تشبیہ دی گئی ہے جس سے اگی ہوئی کھیتی خوب ہری بھری ہو جاتی ہے۔ احسن البیان کے مطابق یہاں کفار سے مراد کسان ہیں، کیونکہ اس لفظ کا لغوی معنی چھپانے والا ہے، اور کسان بھی زمین میں بیج چھپاتا ہے۔
