هُوَ ٱلْأَوَّلُ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرُ وَٱلظَّٰهِرُ وَٱلْبَاطِنُ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward, and He knows everything. The commentaries of both traditions gloss the first pair the same way: before everything with no beginning, after everything with no end. On the second pair they say more than one thing, and what they share is that He is evident by what points to Him and beyond the reach of the senses.
اس آیت میں اللہ کی چار صفات، اول، آخر، ظاہر اور باطن، اکٹھی بیان ہوئی ہیں، اور فرمایا گیا کہ وہ ہر چیز کا علم رکھنے والا ہے۔ احسن البیان کے مطابق اول کا مطلب ہے کہ اس سے پہلے کچھ نہ تھا، آخر کا مطلب ہے کہ اس کے بعد کوئی چیز نہ ہوگی، ظاہر کا مطلب ہے کہ وہ سب پر غالب ہے اسے کوئی مغلوب نہیں کر سکتا، اور باطن کا مطلب ہے کہ باطن کی تمام باتوں کا علم صرف اسی کو ہے یا وہ لوگوں کی نظروں اور عقلوں سے مخفی ہے۔ رازی اس آیت کی تفسیر میں ایک حدیث نقل کرتے ہیں جس میں نبی کریم نے انہی چار ناموں کی یہی معنویت بیان فرمائی۔
