فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
And whoever does not find one - fasting two months in succession, before the two touch each other. And whoever is not able to - feeding sixty needy people. That is so that you may believe in God and His Messenger. And these are God's limits. And for those who refuse there is a painful punishment. The commentaries read the sequence as a lightening rather than a penalty raised in stages, and note that the last clause of it names belief as the point of the whole ruling.
پھر جو غلام آزاد کرنے کی طاقت نہ رکھے اسے میاں بیوی کے ملاپ سے پہلے مسلسل دو مہینے کے روزے رکھنے ہوں گے، اور جو یہ بھی نہ کر سکے تو اسے ساٹھ مسکینوں کو کھانا کھلانا ہوگا۔ یہ حکم اس لیے مقرر کیا گیا تاکہ تم اللہ اور اس کے رسول پر ایمان لاؤ، اور یہ اللہ کی مقرر کردہ حدیں ہیں، اور جو کافر ان احکام کا مذاق اڑائیں ان کے لیے دردناک عذاب ہے۔ مفسرین نے اس ترتیب کی تفسیر بتدریج آسانی سے کی ہے نہ کہ بڑھتی ہوئی سزا سے، اور آیت کے آخر میں ایمان کو ہی اس حکم کا اصل مقصد بتایا۔
