كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَرِيبًا ذَاقُوا۟ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Like those a little before them, who tasted the ill outcome of their affair, and for whom there is a painful punishment. The commentaries differ over which earlier group is meant and agree on the shape of the comparison: something of the same kind had happened recently enough that the people being addressed had watched it.
