مَا قَطَعْتُم مِّن لِّينَةٍ أَوْ تَرَكْتُمُوهَا قَآئِمَةً عَلَىٰٓ أُصُولِهَا فَبِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيُخْزِىَ ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ
Whatever palm trees you cut down, or left standing on their roots, it was by God's leave, and so that He might disgrace those who have left obedience. The commentaries agree that the cutting was permitted rather than commanded, and that the line answers an objection made at the time - that destroying fruit-bearing trees is ruin - by saying whose leave it had.
تم نے جو بھی کھجور کے درخت کاٹے، یا انہیں ان کی جڑوں پر کھڑا چھوڑ دیا، یہ سب اللہ کی اجازت سے ہوا، اور اس لیے کہ وہ نافرمانی کرنے والوں کو رسوا کر دے۔ مفسرین اس بات پر متفق ہیں کہ کاٹنا حکم نہیں بلکہ اجازت تھی، اور یہ آیت اس وقت کے ایک اعتراض کا جواب دیتی ہے - کہ پھل دار درختوں کو تباہ کرنا بربادی ہے - یہ بتا کر کہ یہ کس کی اجازت سے ہوا۔
