بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ عَدُوِّى وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ تُلْقُونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا جَآءَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْحَقِّ يُخْرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ أَن تُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَٰدًا فِى سَبِيلِى وَٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِى تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا۠ أَعْلَمُ بِمَآ أَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَآ أَعْلَنتُمْ وَمَن يَفْعَلْهُ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ
O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, offering them affection, when they have refused the truth that has come to you, driving out the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in God your Lord. If you have gone out to strive in My way and to seek My good pleasure - you keep affection for them secret, and I know better what you hid and what you made known. And whoever of you does it has strayed from the level way. Both traditions carry the same occasion: Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a, an emigrant whose family was still in Mecca, sent word ahead of the Prophet's march, and this came down about it.
اے ایمان والو! میرے دشمن اور اپنے دشمن کو دوست نہ بناؤ کہ ان کی طرف دوستی کا پیغام بھیجو، حالانکہ انہوں نے اس حق کا انکار کیا جو تمہارے پاس آیا، وہ رسول کو اور تمہیں صرف اس لیے نکالتے ہیں کہ تم اللہ اپنے رب پر ایمان لائے ہو۔ اگر تم میری راہ میں جہاد اور میری رضا کی طلب میں نکلے ہو تو ان سے چپکے چپکے دوستی نہ کرو، اور میں خوب جانتا ہوں جو تم چھپاؤ اور جو ظاہر کرو، اور جو کوئی تم میں سے ایسا کرے وہ سیدھی راہ سے بھٹک گیا۔ قرطبی کے مطابق سورۃ الممتحنہ مدنی ہے اور اس کی تیرہ آیات ہیں، اور ممتحنہ کا مطلب امتحان لینے والی ہے۔ ابن کثیر اور علامہ سعدی دونوں لکھتے ہیں کہ اس سورت کے آغاز کا سبب نزول حضرت حاطب بن ابی بلتعہ کا واقعہ ہے، جو مہاجر تھے اور بدر میں بھی شریک ہوئے تھے، مگر ان کا خاندان اور مال مکہ میں تھا، انہوں نے فتح مکہ کی خبر مشرکینِ مکہ تک پہنچا دی تھی۔
