يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا جَآءَكُمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ مُهَٰجِرَٰتٍ فَٱمْتَحِنُوهُنَّ ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِإِيمَٰنِهِنَّ فَإِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤْمِنَٰتٍ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ لَا هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَّهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّ وَءَاتُوهُم مَّآ أَنفَقُوا۟ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَآ ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ وَلَا تُمْسِكُوا۟ بِعِصَمِ ٱلْكَوَافِرِ وَسْـَٔلُوا۟ مَآ أَنفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْـَٔلُوا۟ مَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ ذَٰلِكُمْ حُكْمُ ٱللَّهِ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them. God knows best about their faith. Then if you know them to be believers, do not send them back to those who refused. They are not lawful for them, nor are those men lawful for them. And give the men what they have spent. And there is no blame on you if you marry them, when you have given them their bridal gifts. And do not hold on to the marriage ties of women who refuse. And ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is God's judgement; He judges between you, and God is Knowing, Wise. The commentaries set it after the treaty at al-Hudaybiya, under which those who came over were to be returned, and gloss the testing as putting the woman's own reason for coming to the question.
اے ایمان والو! جب مومن عورتیں ہجرت کر کے تمہارے پاس آئیں تو ان کا امتحان لو، اللہ ان کے ایمان کو خوب جانتا ہے، پھر اگر تم انہیں مومن جان لو تو انہیں کافروں کی طرف نہ لوٹاؤ، نہ وہ ان کے لیے حلال ہیں اور نہ وہ ان کے لیے حلال ہیں، اور انہیں وہ دو جو انہوں نے خرچ کیا تھا، اور تم پر کوئی گناہ نہیں کہ ان سے نکاح کر لو جب انہیں ان کے مہر دے دو، اور کافر عورتوں کے ساتھ اپنے نکاح کے بندھن نہ رکھو، اور جو تم نے خرچ کیا وہ مانگ لو اور وہ بھی جو انہوں نے خرچ کیا مانگ لیں، یہ اللہ کا حکم ہے، وہ تمہارے درمیان فیصلہ کرتا ہے، اور اللہ جاننے والا حکمت والا ہے۔ ابن کثیر لکھتے ہیں کہ سورۃ الفتح میں صلح حدیبیہ کا ذکر گزر چکا ہے جو رسول اللہ ﷺ اور کفارِ قریش کے درمیان ہوئی تھی، جس میں یہ شرط بھی تھی کہ ہم میں سے جو تمہارے پاس آئے، اگرچہ تمہارے دین پر ہو، تم اسے واپس کر دو گے۔ زمخشری کے مطابق امتحان لینے کا مطلب ہے قسم اور علامات کو دیکھ کر ان کے ایمان کے سچے ہونے کا گمانِ غالب حاصل کرنا۔
