وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ قَٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ
Their bodies impress you, and their speech is worth hearing for the polish of it. But they are like timbers propped against a wall — bulk holding nothing up, because they will not understand. Every shout raised, a call across the camp or a cry over something lost, they take to be aimed at them, from what they carry inside. They are the enemy, so beware of them.
اور جب تم انہیں دیکھو تو ان کے جسم تمہیں اچھے لگیں، اور اگر وہ بات کریں تو تم ان کی بات سنو، گویا وہ دیوار سے ٹیکی ہوئی لکڑیاں ہیں، وہ ہر آواز کو اپنے خلاف سمجھتے ہیں، وہی دشمن ہیں، ان سے بچو۔ قرطبی وضاحت کرتے ہیں کہ اجسامھم سے مراد ان کی شکل و صورت اور ظاہری وضع ہے، اور وان یقولوا تسمع لقولھم سے مراد عبداللہ بن ابی ہیں۔ زمخشری بتاتے ہیں کہ عبداللہ بن ابی ایک بڑے جسم والا، خوبصورت، فصیح اور تیز زبان والا شخص تھا، اور منافقین کی ایک جماعت اس کی صفت پر تھی، وہ مدینہ کے سردار تھے، رسول اللہ ﷺ کی مجلس میں حاضر ہوتے اور اس میں ٹیک لگا کر بیٹھتے۔
