وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالُوا۟ مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
And when a community among them said: why do you admonish a people whom God is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment? They said: as an excuse before your Lord, and so that they may guard themselves. The commentaries hold both halves of the answer: the speaking discharges the duty, and it may still reach someone.
اور جب ان میں سے ایک جماعت نے کہا: تم ایسے لوگوں کو نصیحت کیوں کرتے ہو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا سخت عذاب دینے والا ہے؟ انہوں نے کہا: تمہارے رب کے سامنے عذر پیش کرنے کے لیے، اور شاید وہ تقویٰ اختیار کر لیں۔ مفسرین اس جواب کے دونوں پہلوؤں کو برقرار رکھتے ہیں: بولنا ذمہ داری ادا کرتا ہے، اور ہو سکتا ہے یہ کسی تک پہنچ ہی جائے۔
