بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَٰنِ حِينٌ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًٔا مَّذْكُورًا
Has there come upon man a stretch of time in which he was not a thing worth mentioning? The commentaries agree the question is put to be granted: there was such a time, when he was nothing anyone spoke of.
کیا انسان پر زمانے میں سے ایک ایسا وقت گزرا ہے جب وہ کوئی قابلِ ذکر چیز نہ تھا؟ تفسیر مقباس کے مطابق یہ استفہام تقریری ہے، یعنی سوال دراصل اس بات کو ثابت کرنے کے لیے ہے جو اس کے ذریعے مقرر کی جاتی ہے، کیونکہ استفہام سمجھ حاصل کرنے کی طلب ہے۔ علامہ سعدی بتاتے ہیں کہ اللہ نے اس سورت میں انسان کی ابتدائی حالت کا ذکر کیا، کہ اس پر ایک طویل زمانہ گزرا جو اس کے وجود سے پہلے تھا، جب وہ معدوم تھا، بلکہ مذکور بھی نہ تھا۔
