كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
No — rather, a rust has covered their hearts from what they were earning. The commentaries agree the rust is laid on by the deeds themselves, and that it builds until it covers.
