إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ
except what God wills. He knows what is open and what is hidden. The commentaries carry the same background: he used to hurry after the recitation for fear of losing it, and this is the assurance that he would not.
