Quran Research · The Signs Inventory

Every sign, and not one left out

Every ayah in which God points to the natural world and calls it a sign — 53 verses, generated directly from the verified corpus rather than assembled by hand, so none can be omitted by oversight.

How this list was built, and why that matters

This inventory is EXHAUSTIVE BY CONSTRUCTION. The verses were found by searching all 6,236 ayat of the corpus for the two sign-formulas — the explicit «among His signs» and the «surely in that are signs» pattern — and then keeping those whose content is the natural world. A hand-assembled list can quietly drop a verse and nobody notices. This one cannot: re-run the script and you get the same set every time. That reproducibility is what makes it citable.

Where my analysis is written it appears under each ayah. Where it is not yet written, the ayah still appears in full, marked as awaiting analysis. Nothing is hidden behind incompleteness.

HilaliVerily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.) for people of understanding.
SahihIndeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.
PickthallLo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and (in) the ordinance of the winds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth: are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for people who have sense.
YusufaliBehold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind; in the rain which Allah Sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead; in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth; in the change of the winds, and the clouds which they Trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth;- (Here) indeed are Signs for a people that are wise.
Arberry.. Surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day and the ship that runs in the sea with profit to men, and the water God sends down from heaven therewith reviving the earth after it is dead and His scattering abroad in it all manner of crawling thing, and the turning about of the winds and the clouds compelled between heaven and earth -- surely there are signs for a people having understanding.
The sign named

Creation of heavens and earth; alternation of night and day; ships sailing; rain reviving dead land; creatures dispersed; the directing of the winds; clouds held between sky and earth.

Analysis

The single densest signs-verse in the Qur'an - seven distinct natural phenomena in one ayah, closing with 'signs for a people who use reason'.

GRAMMATICAL POINT WORTH PUBLISHING: the creatures here are dispersed 'FIHA' - singular feminine - which refers to the EARTH. Contrast 42:29, which uses the DUAL 'fihima'. See the note on 42:29; the distinction is precise and it is checkable.

HilaliWould any of you wish to have a garden with date-palms and vines, with rivers flowing underneath, and all kinds of fruits for him therein, while he is striken with old age, and his children are weak (not able to look after themselves), then it is struck with a fiery whirlwind, so that it is burnt? Thus does Allah make clear His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses) to you that you may give thought.
SahihWould one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines underneath which rivers flow in which he has from every fruit? But he is afflicted with old age and has weak offspring, and it is hit by a whirlwind containing fire and is burned. Thus does Allah make clear to you [His] verses that you might give thought.
PickthallWould any of you like to have a garden of palm-trees and vines, with rivers flowing underneath it, with all kinds of fruit for him therein; and old age hath stricken him and he hath feeble offspring; and a fiery whirlwind striketh it and it is (all) consumed by fire. Thus Allah maketh plain His revelations unto you, in order that ye may give thought.
YusufaliDoes any of you wish that he should have a garden with date-palms and vines and streams flowing underneath, and all kinds of fruit, while he is stricken with old age, and his children are not strong (enough to look after themselves)- that it should be caught in a whirlwind, with fire therein, and be burnt up? Thus doth Allah make clear to you (His) Signs; that ye may consider.
ArberryWould any of you wish to have a garden of palms and vines, with rivers flowing beneath it, and all manner of fruit there for him, then old age smites him, and he has seed, but weaklings, then a whirlwind with fire smites it, and it is consumed? So God makes clear the signs to you; haply you will reflect.
The sign named

A garden of palms and vines with rivers beneath, struck by a fiery whirlwind and burned, belonging to a man overtaken by old age with weak offspring.

Analysis

A PARABLE, not a natural sign. The imagery is agricultural but the subject is the futility of deeds done for display. Filed here for completeness because the search returned it; it carries no scientific content.

SahihAnd [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
PickthallAnd will make him a messenger unto the Children of Israel, (saying): Lo! I come unto you with a sign from your Lord. Lo! Yusufali"And (appoint him) a messenger to the Children of Israel, (with this message): "'I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah's leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah's leave; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe;
Arberryto be a Messenger to the Children of Israel saying, "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will create for you out of clay as the likeness of a bird; then I will breathe into it, and it will be a bird, by the leave of God. I will also heal the blind and the leper, and bring to life the dead, by the leave of God. I will inform you too of what things you eat, and what you treasure up in your houses. Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
The sign named

Jesus forming a bird from clay and breathing life into it, curing the blind and the leper, raising the dead - all by God's permission.

Analysis

MIRACLE-SIGNS, not natural signs. These are explicitly signs given to a prophet, and the ayah attaches 'by God's permission' to each, placing causation outside mechanism.

One honest and interesting observation for a paper: two of the three have MOVED CATEGORY over time. Leprosy is now curable by multidrug therapy, and some forms of blindness are now treatable by gene therapy and retinal implants. Raising the dead has not moved and shows no sign of doing so. That a miracle-list partially migrates into medicine as centuries pass is itself a finding worth writing about.

The sign named

Creation of the heavens and earth; alternation of night and day.

Analysis

Addressed to 'ulu al-albab' - those of understanding. Paired with 3:191, which describes them reflecting on creation standing, sitting and lying down. Taken together this is the Qur'an's clearest statement that observation of nature is an act of worship, which is a strong framing verse for any paper in this project.

The sign named

Production of all humanity from a single soul, with a place of settlement (mustaqarr) and a place of storage (mustawda').

Analysis

Links directly to 4:1 and the human-origins entry. The germline reading of mustawda' - reproductive cells set aside and stored - is modern; classical readings vary widely between the womb and loins, the earth and the grave, this world and the next.

The Category 5 content is the population-genetics tension described under 4:1, not the lexical reading.

And from the palm trees - of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
PickthallHe it is Who sendeth down water from the sky, and therewith We bring forth buds of every kind; We bring forth the green blade from which We bring forth the thick-clustered grain; and from the date-palm, from the pollen thereof, spring pendant bunches; and (We bring forth) gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and unlike. Look upon the fruit thereof, when they bear fruit, and upon its ripening. Lo! herein verily are portents for a people who believe.
YusufaliIt is He Who sendeth down rain from the skies: with it We produce vegetation of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops), out of which We produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date-palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are signs for people who believe.
ArberryIt is He who sent down out of heaven water, and thereby We have brought forth the shoot of every plant, and then We have brought forth the green leaf of it, bringing forth from it close-compounded grain, and out of the palm-tree, from the spathe of it, dates thick-lustered, ready to the hand, and gardens of vines, olives, pomegranates, like each to each, and each unlike to each. Look upon their fruits when they fructify and ripen! Surely, in all this are signs for a people who do believe.
The sign named

Rain producing growth; grain in layered arrangement; date clusters; gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates.

Analysis

'Grains arranged in layers' (mutarakiban) is a precise botanical observation of how cereal grains are stacked on the ear. Accurate; also plainly observable to an agricultural society.

SahihSay, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection." Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.

YusufaliFrom the land that is clean and good, by the will of its Cherisher, springs up produce, (rich) after its kind: but from the land that is bad, springs up nothing but that which is niggardly: thus do we explain the signs by various (symbols) to those who are grateful.
ArberryAnd the good land -- its vegetation comes forth by the leave of its Lord, and the corrupt -- it comes forth but scantily. Even so We turn about the signs for a people that are thankful.
The sign named

The good land brings forth its vegetation by its Lord's permission; the bad land brings forth only sparsely and with difficulty.

Analysis

Soil fertility. Confirmed - soil quality, determined by organic content, mineral composition, structure and microbial life, governs plant productivity. Justus von Liebig founded agricultural chemistry and the mineral theory of plant nutrition in 1840.

The ayah is a parable about receptive and unreceptive hearts, and the agronomy is the vehicle rather than the point. Accurate, and plainly observable to a farming society.

Allah did not create this but in truth. He explains the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for people who have knowledge.
SahihIt is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know
PickthallHe it is Who appointed the sun a splendour and the moon a light, and measured for her stages, that ye might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. Allah created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge.
YusufaliIt is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand.
ArberryIt is He who made the sun a radiance, and the moon a light, and determined it by stations, that you might know the number of the years and the reckoning. God created that not save with the truth, distinguishing the signs to a people who know.
The sign named

Sun as radiance (diya'), moon as light (nur), lunar phases determined for calendrical reckoning.

Analysis

The sun emits, the moon reflects. VERIFY THE LEXICAL PATTERN with qsearch before publishing: the argument depends on the Qur'an consistently using diya'/siraj for the sun and nur/munir for the moon, and consistency is checkable rather than assertable.

Alternation of night and day; all that God created in the heavens and the earth.

HilaliVerily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who reflect.
SahihThe example of [this] worldly life is but like rain which We have sent down from the sky that the plants of the earth absorb - [those] from which men and livestock eat - until, when the earth has taken on its adornment and is beautified and its people suppose that they have capability over it, there comes to it Our command by night or by day, and We make it as a harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people who give thought.
PickthallThe similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men and cattle eat mingleth with it till, when the earth hath taken on her ornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and We make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do we expound the revelations for people who reflect.
YusufaliThe likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies: by its mingling arises the produce of the earth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it: There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect.
ArberryThe likeness of this present life is as water that We send down out of heaven, and the plants of the earth mingle with it whereof men and cattle eat, till, when the earth has taken on its glitter and has decked itself fair, and its inhabitants think they have power over it, Our command comes upon it by night or day, and We make it stubble, as though yesterday it flourished not. Even so We distinguish the signs for a people who reflect.
The sign named

Worldly life likened to rain, with which the earth's plants mingle, until the earth takes on its adornment - then the command comes and it is made a harvested field, as if it had not flourished the day before.

Analysis

A parable using an accurate ecological cycle: rain, growth, peak biomass, then sudden collapse. Desert ecosystems in particular show exactly this - explosive flowering after rain followed by rapid senescence.

Parallel to 18:45. The register is moral rather than descriptive, and it should be presented that way.

Analysis

Circadian biology. Confirmed - the sleep-wake cycle is governed by an endogenous clock entrained by light, with the suprachiasmatic nucleus identified as the master pacemaker in 1972 and the molecular clock genes earning the Nobel Prize in 2017.

Pairs with 27:86, which states the same thing almost verbatim, and with 78:9 and 30:23 on sleep. Note the Qur'an returns to night-as-rest repeatedly, which is worth recording as a pattern rather than a single instance.

ArberrySay: 'Behold what is in the heavens and in the earth!' But neither signs nor warnings avail a people who do not believe.
The sign named

Say: observe (unzuru) what is in the heavens and the earth.

Analysis

A METHODOLOGICAL VERSE, and one of the most useful in the whole inventory for framing a paper. It is a direct imperative to observe the natural world.

Pairs with 29:20 (travel and see how He began creation), 41:53 (signs in the horizons and in yourselves), and 3:190-191 (reflection on creation as worship). Together these four constitute the Qur'an's stated posture toward empirical observation, and that is a coherent paper on its own.

Note the closing clause: signs avail nothing to those who will not believe. The ayah asserts that observation is necessary but not sufficient - which is a more sophisticated epistemology than it is usually credited with.

The sign named

Not a natural sign - FILTER FALSE POSITIVE.

Analysis

'The signs' here means the evidence of Yusuf's innocence, not signs in nature. The verse was caught by the keyword filter and is retained so the generated set stays honest.

WHY THIS MATTERS METHODOLOGICALLY, and it belongs in your methods section: an automated search returns what the pattern matches, not what you meant. Reporting the false positives rather than quietly deleting them is what distinguishes a reproducible method from a curated one. Anyone re-running the script gets these too.

Gravitation as an invisible support - Newton, 1687. Note the grammatical ambiguity: 'bi-ghayri 'amadin tarawnaha' can be read as 'without pillars that you can see' or 'without pillars, as you see'. Both are available; state the ambiguity rather than choosing silently.

Analysis

Plant sexuality - Camerarius 1694, Linnaeus 1735. One of the stronger confirmed entries, since plant sexuality was unknown and was resisted when first proposed.

The honest counterpoint you should raise yourself: date palms were artificially pollinated in Arabia by practice, so male and female palms were known empirically for that species. That does not extend to all fruiting plants.

The sign named

Neighbouring plots of land, gardens of grapes, crops and palms - some growing several from a single root, some not - WATERED WITH ONE WATER, yet We make some excel others in fruit.

Analysis

THIS IS A SUBTLER VERSE THAN IT LOOKS AND IT IS UNDERUSED. The ayah isolates a variable deliberately: same land, same water, different outcome. That is the structure of a controlled comparison, and it points at something internal to the plant rather than to its environment.

What accounts for the difference is genetics - and the ayah's detail 'sinwan wa ghayru sinwan', several stems from one root or not, is the distinction between clonal and non-clonal propagation. Date palms are propagated from offshoots, producing genetically identical clones.

The confirmed half: Mendelian inheritance (1866, rediscovered 1900) and plant genetics explain why identical conditions yield different fruit.

THE CATEGORY 5 HALF: the genotype-to-phenotype map is NOT solved. We can sequence a plant's genome completely and still cannot predict its fruit, yield or quality from the sequence. Predicting phenotype from genotype is one of the central open problems in biology, and it is exactly the question this ayah frames - same water, different outcome, why?

This is a strong and original paper opening. Nobody uses 13:4 this way.

HilaliAnd from the fruits of date-palms and grapes, you derive strong drink (this was before the order of the prohibition of the alcoholic drinks) and a goodly provision. Verily, therein is indeed a sign for people who have wisdom.
SahihAnd from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.
PickthallAnd of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence ye derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for people who have sense.
YusufaliAnd from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise.
ArberryAnd of the fruits of the palms and the vines, you take therefrom an intoxicant and a provision fair. Surely in that is a sign for a people who understand.
The sign named

From the fruits of palms and grapevines you take intoxicant (sakar) and good provision.

Analysis

Fermentation. Confirmed - Pasteur demonstrated in 1857 that fermentation is caused by living yeast rather than by spontaneous chemical decay, founding microbiology.

Note the ayah distinguishes the intoxicant from the 'good provision' drawn from the same fruits, which is chronologically significant: this is a Makkan verse, and the prohibition of wine came later in Madinah. Commentators read it as an early step in that sequence.

Observable in practice - fermentation was universally practised - but its cause was unknown until 1857.

The sign named

From the bellies of bees a drink of varying colours, in which is healing for people.

Analysis

TWO SEPARATE MATTERS, and you must keep them apart. Honey's antimicrobial and wound-healing action is CONFIRMED - medical-grade honey is used clinically. The Arabic verbs addressing the bee are feminine throughout, and forager bees are female; Charles Butler established the colony's female workers in 1609.

The genuine Category 5 content is neither of those. It is bee NAVIGATION - how bees and other animals sense magnetic fields remains unsolved, with the radical-pair cryptochrome hypothesis leading and unconfirmed. That is an open problem in quantum biology.

Analysis

HilaliO you who believe! Let your legal slaves and slave-girls, and those among you who have not come to the age of puberty ask your permission (before they come to your presence) on three occasions; before Fajr (morning) prayer, and while you put off your clothes for the noonday (rest), and after the 'Isha' (late-night) prayer. (These) three times are of privacy for you, other than these times there is no sin on you or on them to move about, attending (helping) you each other. Thus Allah makes clear the Ayat (the Verses of this Quran, showing proofs for the legal aspects of permission for visits, etc.) to you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
SahihO you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
PickthallO ye who believe! Let your slaves, and those of you who have not come to puberty, ask leave of you at three times (before they come into your presence): Before the prayer of dawn, and when ye lay aside your raiment for the heat of noon, and after the prayer of night. Three times of privacy for you. It is no sin for them or for you at other times, when some of you go round attendant upon others (if they come into your presence without leave). Thus Allah maketh clear the revelations for you. Allah is Knower, Wise.
YusufaliO ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and the (children) among you who have not come of age ask your permission (before they come to your presence), on three occasions: before morning prayer; the while ye doff your clothes for the noonday heat; and after the late-night prayer: these are your three times of undress: outside those times it is not wrong for you or for them to move about attending to each other: Thus does Allah make clear the Signs to you: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.
ArberryO believers, let those your right hands own and those of you who have not reached puberty ask leave of you three times -- before the prayer of dawn, and when you put off your garments at the noon, and after the evening prayer -- three times of nakedness for you. There is no fault in you or them, apart from these, that you go about one to the other. So God makes clear to you the signs; and God is All-knowing, All-wise.

The sign named

He created you from dust, then suddenly you were human beings dispersing.

Analysis

Abiogenesis and human origins together. Links to 55:14, 15:26 and 4:1.

The Qur'an describes the human material at several distinct stages across surahs - dust, clay, sticky clay, altered dark mud, dried sounding clay. A paper tracing THAT SEQUENCE against prebiotic chemistry stages would be original, and this project's corpus lets you extract every occurrence and check the sequence rather than assert it.

Analysis

Pair-bonding is real and studied - the neurobiology of attachment, oxytocin and vasopressin systems. But the mechanistic basis of human pair-bonding and of love as a subjective state is not solved, and connects to the hard problem under 17:85.

ArberryAnd of His signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and the variety of your tongues and hues. Surely in that are signs for all living beings.
The sign named

Creation of the heavens and the earth; the diversity of your languages and your colours.

Analysis

Pigmentation genetics is partly mapped and human variation does not partition into discrete biological races - Lewontin, 1972. That half is confirmed.

The Category 5 content is LANGUAGE. Why human language diversified as it did, and the deep relationships between language families, are unresolved - historical linguistics cannot reliably reconstruct beyond roughly eight to ten thousand years, because language leaves no fossils. Computational phylogenetics on large corpora may push that horizon back.

Note the ayah pairs tongues and colours as parallel signs, which is a striking framing given both are now studied as population-level variation.

PickthallAnd of His signs is your slumber by night and by day, and your seeking of His bounty. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who heed.
YusufaliAnd among His Signs is the sleep that ye take by night and by day, and the quest that ye (make for livelihood) out of His Bounty: verily in that are signs for those who hearken.
ArberryAnd of His signs is your slumbering by night and day, and your seeking after His bounty. Surely in that are signs for a people who hear.
The sign named

Your sleep by night and by day, and your seeking of His bounty.

Analysis

WHY SLEEP EXISTS remains genuinely contested. It is universal, evolutionarily costly, and lethal to remove - and no single accepted account explains why. Sleep architecture, memory consolidation and glymphatic clearance are established; the core functional question is not.

Pairs directly with 39:42, which links sleep and death, and with 78:9.

PickthallAnd of His signs is this: He showeth you the lightning for a fear and for a hope, and sendeth down water from the sky, and thereby quickeneth the earth after her death. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who understand.
YusufaliAnd among His Signs, He shows you the lightning, by way both of fear and of hope, and He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: verily in that are Signs for those who are wise.

The sign named

Lightning shown as fear and hope; rain sent down reviving the dead earth.

Analysis

Same as 24:43 - the rain cycle is confirmed, lightning INITIATION is the open problem. Two separate signs-verses naming lightning is worth noting; the Qur'an returns to it.

The sign named

That the heaven and the earth remain standing by His command.

Analysis

Read as the stability of physical order, this touches the fine-tuning problem - why the physical constants permit a structured universe at all. That is a genuine live question in physics.

Qualified heavily: the fine-tuning reading is imported. The ayah's plain sense is divine sustaining, which is Category 1. Do not present the physics reading as the meaning.

SahihAllah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
PickthallAllah receiveth (men's) souls at the time of their death, and that (soul) which dieth not (yet) in its sleep. He keepeth that (soul) for which He hath ordained death and dismisseth the rest till an appointed term. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought.
YusufaliIt is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death; and those that die not (He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies) for a term appointed verily in this are Signs for those who reflect.

The sign named

God takes the souls at death, and those that do not die during their sleep; He keeps some and releases others.

Analysis

One of the strongest consciousness entries. The ayah draws an explicit parallel between sleep and death - both as states in which the self is taken.

The Category 5 content: why consciousness is suspended and returns, and what dreaming is FOR, remain unsolved. Pairs with 17:85 and 30:23 for a coherent paper on the Qur'an and the unresolved science of mind.

The sign named

The night and the day, the sun and the moon - and the instruction not to prostrate to sun or moon but to their Creator.

Analysis

Astronomically ordinary; theologically pointed. Its interest is the explicit refusal of astral worship in a signs-verse - the natural object is a sign, never an object of devotion. That is a useful framing point for a paper on the Qur'an's posture toward nature.

SahihAnd of his signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and what He has dispersed throughout them of creatures. And He, for gathering them when He wills, is competent.
PickthallAnd of His portents is the creation of the heaven and the earth, and of whatever beasts He hath dispersed therein. And He is Able to gather them when He will.
YusufaliAnd among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them: and He has power to gather them together when He wills.
ArberryAnd of His signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and the crawling things He has scattered abroad in them; and He is able to gather them whenever He will.
The sign named

Creation of the heavens and the earth, and what He has dispersed THROUGHOUT THEM BOTH of creatures (dabbah).

Analysis

THE STRONGEST ASTROBIOLOGY VERSE, AND HERE IS THE EVIDENCE, WHICH I FOUND BY SEARCHING THE CORPUS RATHER THAN BY RECALL.

The verb baththa - to disperse or scatter - occurs with dabbah in three signs-verses. In 2:164 and 31:10 the pronoun is FIHA, singular feminine, referring to the EARTH alone. In 42:29 alone the pronoun is FIHIMA - the DUAL - referring to the heavens AND the earth together.

So the Qur'an uses the singular feminine when creatures are dispersed in the earth, and the dual ONLY here. That is a precise grammatical distinction, it is checkable by anyone with the corpus, and it materially supports reading 42:29 as asserting creatures beyond the earth.

This is a genuinely publishable observation. State it with the counter: some commentators still read the dual as covering the earth and its atmosphere, or take the creatures as terrestrial with the heavens mentioned alongside. Present the grammar and the dispute together.

The relevant science: over 5,700 exoplanets confirmed, atmospheric spectroscopy of rocky worlds now beginning, biosignature frameworks developed and debated. No life found anywhere but Earth. A confirmed biosignature would bear on this ayah directly, on a timescale of decades.

وَفِى خَلْقِكُمْ وَمَا يَبُثُّ مِن دَآبَّةٍ ءَايَٰتٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ
HilaliAnd in your creation, and what He scattered (through the earth) of moving (living) creatures are signs for people who have Faith with certainty.
SahihAnd in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith].
PickthallAnd in your creation, and all the beasts that He scattereth in the earth, are portents for a folk whose faith is sure.

Arberryand in your creation, and the crawling things He scatters abroad, there are signs for a people having sure faith,
The sign named

In your own creation, and in what He disperses of moving creatures, are signs for a people who are certain.

Analysis

Note the verb yabuththu - the same dispersal verb as 42:29 and 2:164 - but here with NO pronoun at all, so it is unrestricted as to location. That is worth recording alongside the 42:29 grammatical finding.

Pairs 'your own creation' with 'creatures dispersed', which is the same inward-and-outward pairing as 41:53 - signs in the horizons and in yourselves.
